im getting a new laptop and ive narrowed it down to 2 laptops with nearly the same specs except the graphics card: the geforce go 7600 or the geforce 8400m gt. as an avid gamer, this matters to me.
ive heard the 8400 supports DX 10 and all, but the 7600 is better for games. im not so savvy in this field, so can somebody please help me out?

The 8400M GT will performe about the same as the go7600. Do both have the same amount of video ram?
I would go for the 8400M GT. More or less the same performance in Directx9 as the go7600 and but it can also do Directx10.
Which laptops are you looking at? Sony Vaio? -

Personally I'd take the 8400M-GT because there's not much of a difference between it and the Go7600. The 8400 is DirectX 10 so you can enjoy games that come out in the future.
Perhaps you can complete the FAQ in the What Should I Buy forum so we could help you buy a notebook. There might be a better one for your budget. -
If you're an avid gamer, you might look for a machine with an 8600M GT - you'll get considerably more power out of that, frankly.
Of course, it depends on what your budget is and what size laptop you are looking at. -
thanks for the quick replies guys.
i am indeed looking at sony vaio's, and they both have the same amount of video ram.
i guess this means im going for the 8400M GT. thanks again guys -
Hey im having the exact same trouble, im deciding between the sony vaio VGN-FE41S and the VGN-FZ11S. I like the idea that the 8400m GT has direct x10 capabilities but was under the impression the 7600 go was more powerful. Let me know if you find a laptop with an 8600 GT card, the only one ive found so far is by a company called Zepto. If you're deciding out of these same laptops let me know which one you chose and for what reasons, Im also thinking about getting the FZ11Z purely to have a blu-ray drive and future proof my laptop even more.

The Go7600 is more powerful than the 8400M- GS, although the -GT should be much closer in performance. Given a choice between the 8400M-GT and the Go7600, I would get the former - it's newer and DirectX 10.
The Blu-ray drive on the Sony FZ isn't that useful because the machine only has a 1280x800 (WXGA) resolution. To truly take advantage of what Blu-ray offers, you need a 1920x1200 display (WUXGA).
I'd highly recommend the Asus F3SV or the Compal IFL90 over the Sony FZ if you plan to game. -

I agree with Chaz said. They only reason why I'd choose the 8400m is because of the Dx 10.

Hey Ghost Recon, this is somewhat off topic, but can you play Ghost Recon 2 AW on your system?

Same here, the only reason I would choose the 8400M is because it is dx10.

The only reason I have this name is because, I play long range paintball. My cousin is in special forces, and he was able to get us modified training sniper rifles. And we put paintballs, and my friends, myself, and my cousin all shoot at each other. I always get everyone, but they cannot find me. We play in the dark and at the daytime. When I move from one position to another, I cover my trail, leaving nothing behind, so they called me the "Ghost Recon". Ghost for being almost invisible, and Recon for being a sniper. well, a paintball sniper.lol -

Oh... blame it on the misleading name

Anyways, back to topic. The 8400M will have better performance than the 7600. It's newer, and has DX 10 support -
Performance will probably be on par - better in some games and worse in others, but you get PureVideo HD as well as DX10 support, so I'd probably sway towards the 8400M GT if all other variables are the same.

Ok sounds like everyone is agreeing on the 8400m gt being the better card due to dx10 support, however is the card powerful enough to actually play games that require directx10? Would it be worth going for an 8600 gt to make sure the card has the dx10 support AND the power to run newer complex games, or will the 8400 gt still give decent frame rates on newer games. I am aware the max resolution of these laptops is only 1280 x 800 so any thoughts on the power of these cards at this resolution?

How many people have a 8600gt or higher? -
I found a laptop for under £800 that has a 8600m gt. Any opinions on this, its the Aspire 5920. Its designed by bmw (apparently),but its got a lot of criticism over the design n colours, usb positioning etc. The spec for the price seems unmatched.

I think the only legitimate objective criticism was the placement of one of the USB ports right next to the CD-ROM tray, which would necessitate unplugging a USB device to eject the tray. Whether that's a big deal to you is a personal matter though (I personally tried to think of how often I would open the CD tray while having something plugged into that USB port, and the only annoyance I could see would be if I plugged in a mouse or something........ but even then, just unplugging and plugging it back in isn't such a big deal).
