I'm trying to get a notebook for about $1800, for a variety of uses, one of which is gaming. Assuming all other things are as equal as possible (2gb ram, roughly equivalent processors, screen, etc.), should I go for a go 6800/6800 ultra or the new 7600? These seem to be the best options in my price range, and I can find a ton of info on the 6800 obviously, but I want to find out how the 7600 compares. I know the 6800 is technically in a higher performance category, but would it be beneficial to go with the newer generation, even though it's a step down?

Well if you want to fill out the FAQ in the "What should I buy forum" we should be able to help you out on specific laptops.

The 7600 should be on par with the 6800 in terms of performace. However, the 7600 consumes less heat, less power and is newer, therefore get this.
-
Thanks. I think I might fill that out, although I think I have a pretty fair idea of what I am looking for, and am primarily interested in how these two cards stack up.
The power consumption issue is definitely a good point. Then again I'm sure I'd have this thing plugged in while gaming. -
??????????
No, no I believe 7600 is replacing the 6600 and the 7800 is replacing the 6800 so it will not outperform a 6800.
Only things it will have an advantage of will be higher resolutions without as much decrease in FPS and the new feature sets, that's about it I believe.
So I would just say go with whichever is cheaper.

A rough rule of thumb is that a new series card is equal to one higer model of the previous series. 7600=6800

I would go for 7600 because:
-Futureproof (especially if you like new games)
-Less heat, more batterylife
-I guess almost same performance as 6800 (non ultra!) Ultra version is very good, 7600 cant beat that!

You'll probably get similar performance with either, however, although the performance is similar, they are in different classes. The Go6800 is for Desktop Replacements, and the Go7600 for thin-and-lights.
-
-Tomy- that's not totally true. The reason certain newer models perform better in certain benchmarks is because of new feature sets.
Like SM3.0 vs SM2.0 you can see reviews done with new 7800gt's versus 6800gt's and ultras and you can see they perform the same with SM2.0, but with the newer SM3.0 the newer cards get better scores.
I believe I am correct in saying the 7600 is a replacement for the 6600, and 7800 for the 6800.
But yes they will probably perform similarly since they are lowly mobile versions

Why get the 6800 or the 7600 when you can go for a 7800 GTX? Just buy a sager 5720 at pctorque.com You can buy it for around 1600-1700 US dollars and that should leave enough to buy 2 gigs of RAM of newegg. (BTW, it comes with 1 gig of RAM)
-
Dayam that sounds nice. Maybe I should've gotten a sager. Hrmm, naw I'm happy with my baby and I don't game on her much, just game on my desktop.
Cheers,
Mike -
Thanks for the pctorque idea. Sager's own site had convinced me that the 5720 was out of my price range, but I might be able to swing this by eating ramen noodles for a couple of weeks.

PCT is a great dealer, they have a lot of satisfied customers.
Also try www.ISTNC.com - you can get a barebone version of the 9750 (Clevo D900K), then add parts yourself. -
lol, just eat the ramyun and get the laptop~!
