Hi All!
I'm considering to buy the upcomnig XPS, and have a question about the 7800 GTX power consumption:
Does the 7800 GTX have any sleep stages like Pentium M's C0, C1 ...? In other words, does 7800 GTX consume more power than 7800 Go/6800 GO under normal daily tasks? (browsing, music, movies...)
Also, any news on the new XPS? I've been desperately waiting since december! (cancelled my M170 order). I can't help visiting Dell's website and this forum 20 times a day!!
Thanks for the great forum,
Sam

moving this to Gaming, since it is more Graphics card related.
As for the XPS update, no news yet. I haven't even heard any rumors, so it might be awhile. -
althoguh both have similar power consumption and tharmal design, but the go 7800GTX consumes less power than the 6800 ultra in normal day to day activity. NVIDIA implemented dynamic clock scaling on the Go 7800 GTX which allows it to change its clock rate based on the amount of work the GPU is being given. This GPU can run at speeds as low as 16 MHz if needed. The engine, memory and pixel clocks can all be adjusted in this way.
In addition to scaling, clock gate is heavily used in the mobile product, even more so than in the desktop parts for obvious reasons. Gating allows the GPU to turn off certain parts of the GPU (such as the video system) when it is not in use, effectively lowering the clock frequency to 0 for that section resulting in more power savings. while working in 2D, the card is not using the x16 bandwidth made available by PCIe. This x16 can then be throttled down to x1 to maximize power saving options. -
Thanks onik!
I also found a 7800GTX review here which confirms what you said

I have sold and installed a couple dozen of these cards over the last few months and currently have one in my I9300 the 7800GTX uses less power than the 6800U runs cooler (mine averages about 79C running COD2 for 3 or 4 hours)

Any idea about the power consumption difference between 7800 Go and 7800GTX under normal daily tasks? I'm waiting for the new XPS but I never play games! Is it possible to get the same bettery life of 9400 (7800GO) with XPS m1710 (7800GTX)?
Thanks

why u waiting for an xps if u never play games???
-
Because I hate the pale silverish design of 9400 and love the design of XPS!

Well, we can help you out if you complete the FAQ and create a thread in the What to Buy thread.
-
Why should I do that?
I just asked a technical question regarding the power consumption difference between 7800 Go and 7800 Go GTX.

It seems like you are looking for a laptop, and if you aren't going to play games on the XPS, well, there isn't much point to getting it. I don't want you to waste your money.

Yeah, thanks, you're right. For what I'm going to do with my laptop (music production) there's no point to paying an extra grand for the XPS. I know it sounds stupid, but the only reason I'm waiting for the XPS is its look.

Well, if you want a good looking laptop, you could try some of the covers that companies (including DELL) sell. They can add vibrant colors and textures to the outside without forcing you to waste a whole g.
