    Hi everyone,

Right now I'm trying to decide between HP envy 17-3270 and MSI GE70-0nd. Both have essentially same key components except in gpu-s.

Envy hosts 7850m while MSI has gtx660m. And while envy is supposedly better build, longer battery life, illuminated keyboard etc, 660m is faster and tested gpu with better drivers.

Now my question is what is the potential of 7850m in terms of overclocking and how far will oc-ed gtx660m go when stacked against amd-s peer?

also, how well did amd do with drivers of 7xxx series?

    thx

edit: moderator please fix my typing error in the title gt c660m

Judging by the raw specs, the 7850m should be faster by ~10-20%

They are pretty much identical, you might want to take the entire notebook package into account as it may sway you one way or the other if you look past potential 10% performance difference one way or the other. Also some games (not as many) will go to AMD over nVidia given closely matched GPU.

the gtx 660 is not faster and both overclock to the same level in 3d mark 11 which is 3000pts.

This isn't entirely correct. With new drivers from Nvidia, the GTX 660m scores slightly higher at stock clocks. Also my 7850m doesn't overclock higher than 825/1250 (stock is 675/1000) which is about 2650 gpu score on 3dmark 11. I've seen many GT 650m's beat that easily. Newer drivers from both parties may even the gap, but as it stands the GTX 660m should be slightly in the lead.

I think the 7870m will be the one that matches and outerpforms the GTX660m.

Sadly there is a huge gap of performance from HD7870m to HD7970m. Since we no longer have an equivalent of the HD6990m, and only the supposed HD7950m...

    Yeah it sucks.

7850m has identical GPU to HD7770. So in theory it overclocks really well.
Question is, whats the vgpu for 7850M? If its high enough, then close to 1000mhz shouldnt be a problem.

It all depends on your card. Some will overclock well, some won't. Mine seems to top out at 825 core in terms of stability with the 12.7 drivers. That's only 150mhz over stock. As there is no way that I've seen to overvolt, 1000mhz core seems very hard to get to.

Perhaps some smarter guys will come up with modified bios soon, as its been done for several cards.

The HP BIOS is RSA signed, if you know how to flash a modified RSA signed BIOS and don't care about the possibility of a semi-berick / brick, let me know.

I wouldn't want to risk a brick for the sake of a bit more performance. I'm not that brave to sacrifice my $1100 machine.

No. The problem isn't the vbios mod, it's the signature of the BIOS (the vbios is part of the bios... when I modify it, the signature of the bios gets changed).

screw that, if you can't push it nearly as far as gtx660m with regular o/c then those cards are not in the same group

btw howcome gt650 overclocks so well?

Not all will overclock so well. The drivers aren't mature enough to say who will beat who just yet. A good amount of 660m users can't even get theirs stable at stock clocks.
