Hello everyone. Does anyone of you have a radeon HD 7870m graphics card? If yes, how good does it run modern games and how does it compare to, say, a geforce gtx 660m? All I could find was a 3Dmark11 score of around 3000.
Thank you.
-
According to the synthetic scores, Vantage and 3DMark11, it should perform around +15% over 660M. A pretty fast GPU
-
the 7750m is on par with gt 650m and the 7850m is on par with the 660m. u will probably be competing with the 670m in performance. Did you find a laptop that has this card? I have yet to see one in the wild

The Samsung Series 7 is the only one I'm aware of. It's odd that we haven't seen it available in AW, Cevo, or MSI laptops. It would probably be a good performer at a significant price cut from the 670m. -
Yes the samsung series 7 gamer yellow 3D was supposed to have one. I also am interested in this card because I need to decide for a lenovo y500 650m sli or waiting for the new samsung series 7 chronos which will have a 8870m which is a rebranded 7870m.

I see. Aren't the y500 sli models pretty expensive? I thought I remembered them being 1100 or 1200 and up. Just seems high considering the hardware. For that price range, you could get something from MSI or Clevo with a 670mx or 675mx, or 7970m if you're willing to spend a couple hundred more. I saw a thread the other day where a guy picked up a Sager NP9150 with an i7 3630qm, 7970m, and 256gb Samsung 840 for under 1300 bucks with a coupon.
Just putting it out there in case you might be interested, though it might be hard to find something as good as the deal that guy got. -
Yeah they will give me more performance for less money but the problem is i need to take the laptop a lot with me. I know the sagers are pretty light but they are just way too big for me. I know the y500 is not that portable either, so that's why I'm doubting to buy the y500 right now. I can't find a laptop that has a 660m or better and is portable enough too. Maybe the new series 7 with 8870m will suit my needs.
Edit: the new series 7 CHRONOS that is. -

Yeah I understand, but gaming laptops in general aren't great in the portability department. I normally wouldn't recommend it due to it's price, but the Razer Blade is probably the thinnest laptop with a 660m right now. Horribly expensive though. -
Thanks for the suggestion but the price on that thing is the most rediculous I've ever seen. Even some apple products are less overpriced imo.
-

Agreed 100% lol, and Apple is normally the worst when it comes to inflated pricing.
I hope you can find something that fits your budget, power, and portability needs. Unfortunately it's kind of a slim market at this point. It's a good idea though: an affordable, portable, ultrabook-style gaming laptop with an upper mid-range gpu and good cooling would be awesome. -
The new series 7 chronos promises al of that, but €1500 might be a little too high for my small budget
. If I'm not mistaken CES is around this week so maybe similar products might be announced. Let us hope so.

@Pranktank
Haha. Can't stand the waiting eeh?
Is the Samsung a 15' model? I can find the yellow one in 17' but not in 15'.
Honestly, the yellow one looks pretty damn awesome. Shame it's fairly expensive for (both) laptops. -
Haha no but do you mean the series 7 chronos or series 7 gamer?
-
The gamer one.
The powerful one :3 -

Yikes, that's pricey, but I suppose Samsung gets to charge a little extra for the polish and brand name. Still a way better deal than the Blade though. Be sure to check out the weight. It might be on par with some of the bigger Clevos or MSI laptops out there (I'm biased, I know
)

I don't think the 8870M is a rebadged 7870M. Pretty sure the 8870M gets GCN refresh while 7870M is still based on old 6000 series tech?
-
I don't know whether there is a 15", when I have time I'll look for it. I think the 7870m version is discontinued and it now comes with a 7970m/675m.
Yeah it's a lot of money
but some german sites offer the chronos for around €1250. So the price is a mistery for now, I hope it'll drop.
The 15 inch chronos will be around 2.2kg and very thin and also a really thin bezel so very portable. And a battery life up to 11 hours.
Here's the dedicated thread for anyone who's interested:

According to notebookcheck the 8870m will be slower than the 7870m
how is that possible?
-
Another revamp of the nomenclature. 8870M likely to replace 7770M so might not be quite as powerful as 7870M.
PS: So I heard. But there are evidences to the contrary.. -
That would be rediculous. Next generation with the same number should be at least the same performance, or better actually. That's like selling sandy bridge i5's as ivy bridge i7's (I know it's an overexaggeration). That's misleading costumers and should be forbiden imo.

You're right, but both AMD and Nvidia are guilty of questional marketing when it comes to mobile gpu nomenclature. They may have the 8870 instead of the 7770, and an 8970 in place of the 7870, and finally an 8990. -
I find the lack of ATI chips disturbing..

The Clevo P150EM is fine for your needs IMO. The weight and size really isn't an issue unless you are 5 years old or have brittle bones or lack muscles. I just don't see the size or weight being an issues at all.
You can also take a look at the new Asus G46, that's supposed to be lighter and thinner than it's competitors. I really don't understand when people complain about the size and weight of current 15" gaming/perfomance notebooks. -
As a college student the p150em does not really suit my needs because I need to carry it with me a lot. I can handle the weight but a thin portable laptop is just more comfortable to carry around in my backpack. I need to take it with me to class so it needs decent battery life. Although I want a laptop capable of gaming, schoolwork is the main purpose of the laptop I need, thus more important.
I personally just don't like the looks of a gaming laptop and I'll feel like an idiot taking a monster of a laptop to class. I know it's stupid of me for caring about that but I just do. I like a laptop that looks like a normal laptop but has decent gaming performance. -
Get a cheap ultra book? then build a pc to game on. a win win situation.
& i carry my p150em around Uni daily, three kilos isn't that much. Tbh, it doesn't even look like a gaming laptop.... -
A cheap ultrabook and a good gaming desktop will be more expenive. I also go home during the weekends so I can't take a desktop with me every week when I go to my dorm/home. I'm sorry I just don't like the thickness and huge powerbrick of a clevo.
-
Have You considered Dell Precision M4700?
-
No? Why? It comes with professional graphics cards that are around a 650m for gaming at a higher price?
-
It doesn't look like a monster laptop though
-
True
thanks for the suggestion.
7870m anyone
