Well, after quite a bit of complaining because I had quite a bit of video lockup (I believe due to faulty video card) I have managed to get Dell to send me a free 7900 GS. It also helped that my company had to order 2 new laptops in the process. I will be upgrading the card myself so I will let you know how everything goes. Should be here in 5-7 days I think
-
U cannot upgrade a graphic card in a laptop. That graphics card they sent u is 4 a desktop. Sorry. ):
-
ermm...noo...in the 9400 they are upgradeable. many people have upgraded to 7900 GTX's and whatnot
-
well as far as I no, Alienware is the only company that has removoble graphics cards. Even if the dell has removable GPU's, it should b in the XPS systems.
-
Actually, Dells are upgradeable if the card is availabe in the model line your upgrading, IIRC. Other laptops have MXM, a standard used by a few. Most are, like you said, nonremoveable.

In Dell notebooks, it is possible to upgrade the card on certain models.
-
In laptops, Graphic cards r stuck onto the motherboard so they're very hard 2 remove.
-
right, the GPU's in the E1705 and XPS's are not integrated (although for a while the option was there for a while)
-
I don't mean integrated graphics. I said stuck onto the motherboard doesn't mean they're integrated.
-
For reference, here is how to remove the cards in Dell systems

OK mayb this is upgradeable. But ur motherboard might not FULLY support a GPU such as the 7900GS. Probably mayb a 7300/7400.
-
they build the systems with the 7900 GS so it best be
-
Why wouldn't it? It's been done before. The 7900GS is available for the e1705.
-
Hope so. My friend used 2 have a integrated system then u stuck in a geforce 6600 but it turned out that it was only as fast as a geforce 5200.
Good luck 2 u! Daniel -
Well, his X1400 isn't integrated. I think you're just jealous that he has a better GPU than you now. JUST KIDDING!
-
heh...cant wait for it to get here

Once again Juz_Follow_ATI, you should do your homework before posting, upgrading videocards in the 9400 chassis has been done for a long time even in the 9300's you could upgrade you videocard. In fact i think upgrading the video card in the 9400 is simpler than pin modding the good'ol P-m 1.6 to 2.13 if i recall correctly i think it was the 3rd set of pins down on row 15 and 16 correct me if im wrong.
By the way how does a 6600 work like a 5200, two completely different gpu's ones agp ones pci-e and 8pixel pipeline vs 4 pixel pipelines, dx9 vs dx 8.1 I assume unfortunatly that is very incorrect as there is no way in the world that could happen a simple driver update for nvdia cards from laptopvideo2go should have done the trick.
Aivyn I think you'll have a blast installing the video card it will be a good learning experiance and the result of your hard work will be mindblowing
cheers

Woops looks like that post faced some technical difficulties LOL
Anyways best of luck to you Ayvin with the upgrade it will be a huge improvement, and a driver update should have solved the 6600 issue unless it was a faulty install job.

And I think u shoud do some reading comprehensions b4 posting. I said a motherboard doesn't support a 6600 so the speed turned out 2 b as fast as a geforce 5200.

You may want to check the links in my signature.
Or tell my notebook that I bought with a 6800 that it does not have a x1800 inside. -
oh and yes....ayvin can upgrade his/her gaphics card...because dell supports it -
im thinking of writing a little article about how to open certain parts of your E1705 and all the steps I take along my way to installing the card if anyone is interested, I know Dell has the User guide but it is a little bit click here click there to go to the next steps

Hey Aivyn,
Thats a good idea but i think one of those pictorials are up at notebookreview.com at the dell 17inch section may be not, but one for this forums will be kick ass.
