Which one should i get for some intense gaming? Will it really give me a system boost for $50 more?
-
If the difference between the cards is only $50, then certainly go for the 7950 GTX. Its basically an overlcocked 7900 GTX, but it does perform better. There's no real core difference between the two, but the higher clocks of the 7950 GTX, mean it will be better suited for intense gaming.

For $50? Of course! Go for the 7950GTX!

There's not much of a difference between the two as posted, but considering how much a notebook with a Go7900 series card costs, another $50 isn't going to break the bank.

Couldn't one get a 7900 and overclock it oneself?
-
You could do that, however you will be breaking the warranty, and also it may never reach the speeds of the 7950 GTX. And, its only $50 more. Who wouldwant to go through the trouble of overclocking the card. I say trouble, but I realise some people will probably enjoy overclocking.

ok, let me start by telling CHAZ that a 7900GO isnt even in the same league as a 7900GTX. for one thing, the 2 cards differ by 256 MB of video RAM.
a 7900GTX and a 7950GTX on the other hand are INCREDIBLY similar. heres the differance:
The NVIDIA 7900GTX
Technology: 09 micron
Transistor count: 278M
Core (MHz): 500
Vertex Shaders: 8
Pixel Shaders: 8
Memory Interface: 256-bit
Memory Bandwidth(SC/DC): 600MHz/1200MHz
Vertices/Sec(mill.): 1000
Pixel Fill Rate (# ROPs x clk): 8 billion/sec
Texture Fill Rate (# Pixel pipes x clk): 12 billion /sec
RAMDAC: 400Mhz
The NVIDIA 7950GTX
Technology: 09 micron
Transistor count: 278M
Core (MHz): 575
Vertex Shaders: 8
Pixel Shaders: 8
Memory Interface: 256-bit
Memory clock(data rate): 700MHz/1400MHz
Vertices/Sec(mill.): 1140
Pixel Fill Rate (# ROPs x clk): 9.2 billion/sec
Texture Fill Rate (# Pixel pipes x clk): 13.8 billion /sec
RAMDAC: 400Mhz
so, as you can see. the 7950 is overclocked to 575 (75 Mhz, improvment of 15%). the RAM clock is increased 100 MHZ (200MHZ dual channel) resulting in increased memory bandwidth of 15%. the overall result is an increase of theoretical proformence increase of 15%. -
that is correct...

how about a turning your 7900GTX into a 7950GTX for free?...
run regedit. and goto Local_machine > NVidia Corporation > Global > NVTweak goto edit, add new DWORD. name : "Coolbits", with a Value of 3
now, rightclock on desktop, click NVIDIA CONTROL PANEL, and goto 3d settings (see something new?!) goto OVERCLOCKING CONFIGURATION
manually overclock and set to:
GPU clock (core clock): 575 MHz
Memory CLock: 700 MHZ from 600Mhz
wanna know a secret... ive sent my 7900GTX to 700mhz (core)/900(memory**1800 DUAL CHANNEL), without problems... thats a hellvalot faster then 7950GTX
i should have mentioned this in my last post, but... what can you do? its here now... oh and btw... this can violate your warranty, and you didnt hear it from me.. -

ZERO... why pay more for the same crap? -
CON't of my last post, which should be one with this one....
ZERO i also enjoy overclocking, but like i said, why pay more for something you can do yourself.. there is NO HARDWARE DIFFERENCE between the 7900GTX and 7950GTX.. its simply an overclocked chipset
heres how to do it yourself:
1 unlock Nvidias "secret" overclocking tool
Run regedit, and goto HKey...LOCAL_MACHINE > NVidia Corperation > Global > NVTweak goto the menu, click edit, add new DWORD value, called "Coolbits" (no qoutes in the name) and give it a value (by right clicking and selecting modify) of 3.
2. Overclock your GPU and VRAM:
now, goto NVIDIA control panel, and 3d Settings. notice the new option, called OVERCLOCKING CONFIGURATION... open it up, and manually set your clock speed to 575 MHz, and Memory speed to 700Mhz.. your 7900GTX is now a 7950GTX. might want to up the fan speed.
BTW ive taken my Dell XPS M1710 (T2500, 2GB 667D/C, 100GB 7200RPM, 7900GTX) from 500/600(1200) to 700/1800(900), and kept it there for over a hour, no problems...
fight the system!

A major factor in laptop GPU's is the power consumption.
It's true that BIOS mod's increase the performance (Like 7900GSX) , but they might be unbalanced in terms of power consumption. While the power consumption of 7900GTX and 7950GTX is equal.
BTW, please refrain from double or triple-posting. -
pay the $50 bucks, your getting significantly better quality silicon
but seriously the regular 7900gtx isn't guarenteed to hit 7950gtx speeds especially the memory.
dark_x0r: Why in the name of cinnamon would you take a card like that in a laptop to 700/900. are you asking for your laptop to set on fire? -
Depends on your level of hardware expertise, if you will. I would say don't risk overclocking it unless you have at least some notion of how the increased heat will affect the thermal envelope of your laptop.
I used to OC my X1600 when I used a notebook cooler, I don't bother now because the elevation of the keyboard was giving me wrist pains.
