can my m1710 with the 7950gtx and vista play crysis on dx9? i read on another forum you cant play dx9 on dx10 games on vista which didnt really make much sense to me... Also will 7950gtx play crysis maxed out? how comparable is it to the desktop Nvidia 7800GTX/ATI X1800XT ?

Also, my laptop is rele wierd... i got it 2 weeks ago and it played games beautifully but then random problems pop up every now and then such as huge frame rate drops and flickering screens. I always fix this problem my uninstalling and reinstalling the vista 7950 gtx driver. im annoyed that i ahve to do this so often. Also, when its workin well half life 2 maxed out plays at 100-260fps, but now half life 2 maxed out gets 60fps and half life 2 episode 1 gets 10fps. Help mee please...

If you have upped for a WUXGA (1920x1200) I doubt that the 7950gtx will be able to max out crysis (AA/AF wise) but it should be able to play it at high settings with some AA (2xAA 8xAF perhaps), but it is difficult to tell when noone has really tested it (Therefore you could easily say that I am doing an educated guess based on experience)

I don't know which drivers you have been using, but remember that the mobile drivers are different from the regular ones. You might also want to try modified drivers from www.laptopvideo2go.com. In any case there is something wrong because that is definitely not supposed to be happening. Alternatively you could also try to reinstall windows to see if that resolves your problems .

(Edit: Removed some information as it was not correct)

Must be the NVIDIA drivers. I have a similar issue, but it pertains to my Desktop computer. I have a NVIDIA 7900GS and when I play F.E.A.R. under Vista, it'll play fine for a while, and then the frame rates will drop significantly. I guess you'll just have to wait for better video drivers. As far as Crysis goes, there will be a DX9 and a DX10 version. Due to the fact your card only has DX9 hardware, the game will use DX9 and not DX10 regardless of the fact that you have Vista. To utilize DX10, you need an NVIDIA 8x00 series card in your laptop. Crysis should be able to play on Medium settings (my guess). Too early to tell yet.

Btw, nice laptop, but you should have probably waited for Dell to update their graphics cards for the XPS line... that or get a laptop from somewhere else that had an NVIDIA 8600 or 8700 graphics card, but oh well.

    Hope this helps somewhat =/

dx9 is actually implemented natively on vista. there is no emulation going on. people should stop spreading that around incorrectly.

still- the implementation of dx9 on vista is not as good as the one on xp.

plus, the overhead from the operating system and/or poor vista drivers also contribute to lesser performance on vista in dx9 games.

A 7950GTX can handle Crysis no sweat. It may not be the latest and greatest card in existence, but it is still very powerful. I don't think you'll be able to max everything out, but high detail levels are definitely possible.
