Hey guys, Got my second Alienware M18x a couple of nights ago, it came with a pair of 7970ms, naturally one of the first things I did was try overclocking
the gpu. It is completely locked with MSI afterburner, I can't overclock at all, all the values go to 0 after the cfg modification.

    Picture below.

After many attempts and fiddling around, I still can't manage to get it working - I've spent HOURS on this, googling solutions - however nothing out there will fix my problem

    The problem is:

Core clock and memory clock comes up as 0 after the tweaks for the CFG

I've tried many versions of afterburner, changing the settings in the "MSIAFTERBURNER.CFG" file - however it always remains the same,
no matter how many times I try, I'm getting empy values on my MSI afterburner

    I've done the regedit modifications

And tried basically anything I can find on the internet

I'm not "HIGHLY" experienced with overclocking, but my cards did seem to come flashed with a 021 VBIOS or something, is there any possiblility that this could be locking
down the ability to change the values of my GPU?

by the way, I've tried different drivers for the GPU, the 12.11 beta 8 and 12.8 standard.

    Thanks in regards.

First my 4870m's and no my 6970m's, they just don't like MSI Afterburner. have you tried Trixx? A realy great tool as well! You can try that and see if you can fiddle with the clocks/mems.

Secondly, you should really try your hands on flashing the vroms via Radeon Bios Editor. Grab your vrom, edit the values in the editor and flash them on the card ---> a voila! Just remember to save your initial roms, there is a great tutorial on how to do this method of flashing on the site somewhere.

OP please do not act upon post #2 just yet.. The info in that post is regrettably outdated..

For the 7970m, the ONLY overclocking tool is the MSI Afterburner (plus arguably the CCC Overdrive which doesn't work well for me and has to be unlocked by afterburner in the first place). Trixx/ Asus Tweak/ whatever others will not work.

Radeon BIOS Editor is also outdated and does not support 7970m at all. You will need vBIOS patcher (only available to qualified members of TechInferno forum) and ATIFlash.

I was not aware of that... Disregard my post!

There was a time when 4870 was king

Something for the OP to try:
    - Add -xcl to the end of the command line of your Afterburner short-cut
    - Run the short-cut. A notification should be displayed. Restart as prompted.
    - Now open CCC and you should be able to use Overdrive to change your GPU clocks.

The problem I had with CCC Overdrive was that it didn't change the clocks of both my GPU's, making it useless. However this could be due to my vBIOS flashing mischiefs and whatnot so the OP might have better luck.
