Any owners please post their temps. I am using MSI afterburner and getting 59 idle and 68 playing Battlefield 3 1080P Ultra. I am running stock core clocks and memory clocks.

M18x R1. I'm getting 45 idle on both cards and hitting a max temp of around 75 degrees during BF3 or Metro 2033. Running at 930/1350.

seems to idle a little higher than I would like, but great load temps.

My 485m would idle around 43c, however my 9500m gs in my acer idles around 56c and is around 76c under max gaming load and tops out at 83c when running furmark for an extended period of time.

I am planning to pick up one of these to replace my 485m in the next two weeks or so. Ill post my temps when I get it.

Slick dude great temps at 1ghz core 1.5ghz vram... What volts is that? Stock? I heard 930mhz-1ghz stock volts max. Are you usin msi afterburner to monitor or HWiNFO? HWiNFO fins the 7970m sensor in GPUI2C option. And latest version let's you disable individual GPUI2C sensors which is necessary on one particular sensor to prevent bsod on read in HWiNFO on the 7970M. Credit goes to SVL7 for working with Mumak to find a work around... Ie the new version allowing individual GPUI2C sensors to be disabled.

Very nice again what kind of volts are you using for that HaloGod2012 thats very cool :)

SVL7 has a 7970M in a M15x and he stated the following: idle at 40°C with an ambient temp of about 22°C

seems strange a few are idling around 55c thats about 104F vs 131F
maybe difference is thermal material... he used his own vs factory paste...
but 68C max is great HaloGod

Guys, bit of a noob question, but do you have any special cooling systems?

Also, hopefully less nooby, but are you using cooling pads, and which cooling paste are you using?

mx-4 is easy to use as a thermal paste. Tuniq, Prolimatech PK-1 and Innovation Cooling Diamond are fairly top notch pastes. ICD can scratch the die of the card if you have to remove and reapply it more than once but is one of the best...

Notebook coolers help but only help move the hot air away from the laptop where it may localize the heat normally by the exhaust area... so they help but do not literally cool the system sadly.

I am pretty sure all who have posted are using their laptops as is and their cooling is the built in fans etc and some maybe the mentioned notebook cooler.

Overclocked while gaming, my 7970M maxes out at 69C in a 25C home. I have it pasted with Arctic MX-4 and I just have the laptop propped up at the back. This is almost as effective as most laptop coolers.

great win win Andycinoz. not many pastes are better than that one and they would only get about 1-2c less from going from that paste.. not worth the hassle...

    Here ~40°C idle (300/150) and @ BF3 max 76°C @ 965/1450 - that's in a MSI 15,6" notebook so this gpu runs very cool I'd say.

I'm getting my temp readings from MSI Afterburner. I can start HWINFO64 but i don't get the full readings, just GPU core. It doesn't crash on me though. I'll have to go to techinferno and see what SVL7 has been up to lol...but its good to see that they are improving HWINFO support

I can run 1ghz core / 1.5 ghz vram through the 3dmark11, Vantage and Unigine. that is on stock voltage. Most 7970s can be clocked from 950 - 980 core on stock voltage...but a slight boost to 1.075V will get those cards 1ghz core stable. I've never had the need to overvolt as my card runs quite high stock

Great yeah Mumak made it so you can disable about 6 different "GPUI2C" sensors... only 1 causes any lock ups and he might have made it so when 7970m is detected that the problem sensor is auto disabled... Not sure.

Nice 1ghz core is epic... Nice that at most 1.075v is needed.

If you can get your hands on Prolimatech PK-1, use that...or even AC MX-4. IC Diamond is very abrasive and it will scratch or stain your GPU/CPU die. Laptops use lidless dies so there isn't a metal cover on top like their desktop cousins

AS5 is old. VERY old. it still performs well, when there is a good contact between the heatsink and CPU/GPU, but you usually don't get the most optimal contact in a laptop. You want to use something that will work well regardless of contact (cough cough, get PK-1, cough cough)

ya, there is no need for more. 1.075 is the sweetspot, going higher might actually have detrimental affects to performance. I've followed the trials of Widezu and SVL7 closely.

Great info Slick Dude. Yes SVL7 and Widezu are great at what they do.

Not that anyone should need to but is anyone gaming at that 1ghz - 1.075v?

I've used MX-4, ICD and prolimatech pk-1. I just got a gigantic tube of PK-1 I'll probably never run out years from now lol.

My gpus shipped today so I'll be up and running and joining the fun soon. Hopefully this move to 7970m will save me from all the system troubles I've had countless times in the past. I stand by my Alienware though... they take care of their customers.

I don't see running them off of stock clocks for normal use... there's no need... But interesting nonetheless as it seems from what's been posted a lot of you are running 960-1000mhz core for normal use.

Ive been shopping around thinking about getting a good gaming laptop. Im on the fence about getting a 17", I think I would rather a 15" instead. Would a 7970m in a 15" laptop be a bad idea? Do Sagers have sufficient cooling in their 15" units to handle the 7970m?

bro, 28nm is just screaming to be overclocked. The temps are quite good. I run 950/1400 for games, and i bench at 1ghz/1.5ghz. This is on the stock voltage.

    Yes, this is fact.

i like the 17" screen...but it really depends on your priorities. If you want portability, i'd go with a smaller laptop

Something is wrong...are you running on the integrated GPU?

14fps is very low. I average 45fps at stock and 60fps when I apply a modest overclock. Also my stock temps temps are way below yours

Here is my Furmark run @ stock clocks:

Pretty awesome. To have temps barely in the 70's C in a 15" laptop!!

Currently with good thermal paste and contact the 6990M in comparison reaches into the 80s easily in BF3 with fans running at max speed and undervolted to 1V at stock clocks.

Seems even with a huge OC the 7970M is still alot cooler!!

Guys, i need your help. I´ve a np9170 with 7970m and I am experiencing overheating problems.

My seller replaced the thermal paste, but the temperature stays at 90 degrees celsius, and they claim that this is the standard temperature.
    They say there's nothing wrong.

I've seen in forums that the normal temperature at full load is between 70-75

To make a refund, they require me to prove that the 7970m does not reach 90 degrees running Furmark.

Can someone please run Furmark (with 1920x1080) at 7970m and take a printscreen between the middle and end of test 15 minutes? Thanks a lot

On furmark burn in test I'm getting an average of 12fps and max temp of 60.

It's definitely running off the 7970M: "GPU 1 (AMD WIMBLEDON XT) - core: 850 MHz, mem: 1200 MHz, temp 53C, GPU Usage: 100%)"

I think my card is busted or something...

Edit: I pressed FN + F7 to switch BACK to Enduro graphics and whitelisted Furmark and now its avg. 50fps at stock. :) Max temp 67oC

Reviewing your test, I think you tested the onboard card. GPU load was at 0%, and would be 99%.

And I think that was supposed to give 45 FPS, not 30 FPS. I'm pretty sure you ran the test over the intel 4000.

Yeah, I'm starting to think that too. I think my 7970M is faulty because when I disable the Intel Graphics and run just off the 7970M I got 16fps and then 26fps at stock clocks...

What the fish is going on?

If you have a alienware, press FN + F7 to activate the 7970m.
If you are on a clevo, go to desktop, right click on the screen, choose "Switchable Graphics" and set Furmark program to run at "high performance". This will enable the 7970m during the test :)

Also check if the power mode of the windows are high-performance...

Run the test again and post here.

I'll research it, but I noticed that the test of Notebookcheck ( http://www.notebookcheck.net/Alienware-M17x-R4-Notebook-Review.75292.0.html), also scored 17 fps in Furmark for this card. So, don´t panic :)
