This may have been discussed, but I couldn't find anything.

Is there much of a difference, performance wise, between the stock Dell 7970m drivers vs. the modded drivers for the M17X R4?

yes, 12.5 mod beta are the best drivers currently. Slickdudes 7970m guide in his signature has the file.

Are these currently the best drivers for the Clevo based models as well?

In my opinion, no. I have found the 12.6 modded more stable on my P170EM.
