Hi, sorry for posting this here but I thought it might get more notice here than on M15x forum.
I bought my 7970m used from a forum member about a month ago and its worked perfectly in that time. Today my M15x was idling in windows and suddenly screen went black and fans spooled up to maximum.
Pressing the power button did not turn the machine off and closing the lid does not put machine to sleep. Had to take out battery in order to shutdown.
On start up screen is still black, no caps lock, nums lock etc and fans spool up to maximum.
I've taken the 7970m out and replaced it with my old GTX 460m and everything is working perfectly so clearly my 7970m has died?
Can it be revived? Not even seeing the BIOS screen is surely a bad sign. Can't be driver related or motherboard related or any other component?
Should I try baking it?
Really appreciate any assistance!

if it has died then the baking method is sadly the only option but before you try that could you hook up an external monitor to your lappy to see if you get anything on an external screen.
also in the last day did you notice any lines or artifacts on the screen even if only for a few seconds. -

Unfortunately no access to an external monitor. The weird thing about this is that the card was working perfectly up until the screen went black for the first time.
Absolutely no artifacts or lines and was performing perfectly in games. Also there are no beeps which would indicate a classic VGA fail? -
was you gaming at the time?
my 9800GT died on release day of crysis2
was just loading my server in game and the screen froze and the sound went into loop. like you the normal hard 4-5 second turn off didnt work and it took 10 seconds. rebooted and it booted up normally but the whole screen was like above. luckily i was still covered by extendedwarranty and it was replaced the same day with a 260gtx which is still going strong today. -
When a GPU fails, it is not exactly about artifacts/lines etc. That's when a GPU starts to fail in particular areas like bad memory. When a GPU dies, it looses communication, screen goes black. Sometimes it recovers but dies soon after. If your fans ramp up, and your computer doesn't POST but your old GPU works? Sounds like a dead GPU to me.

I want to cry
Going to leave it overnight and try re-installing it tomorrow. Then will try baking it, then I'll curl up in a ball and weep like a wounded kitten. -
Man that gotta suck. Sorry for that.

Does anyone take broken cards and try to fix them?
svl7 for example?

Baking the card into the oven won't help, what x-plate have you used ? Did you notice high idle/gaming temps ? When a card dies for no obvious reasons (no crazy o/cing, o/ving, furemarking etc) it's generally because of an incorrect installation/pads layout (things like this happen, and it's tough to figure this out until the card's gone).

Ok someone explain this to me. I left 7970m in non-static bag overnight and re-installed this morning.
Its working!!! Haven't tried any games yet but what the hell happened? Is this just a beacon of false hope? Is it doomed to fail again? -
It happens, time will tell...all you can do now is some stability testing.

now is the perfect time to see if what went wrong

could of shut down to protect it from thermal overheating. your guess is as good as ours.

Not that. It was idling in widows at around 37 degrees. I have has thermal shutdowns on far cry 3 on ultra after an hour but this was different.
I suspect it was some sort of capacitor-related discharge that was doing something bad. Leaving it over night discharged that capacitor?
7970m dead! Is this the end?
