above question really. got the option to upgrade my laptop to 7970m. is it worth it or hang on
thanks

Well, the 7970m with a little OC is roughtly 100% better than the 6990m (6990m stock goes about 3200 points in 3dmark11, 7970m oc goes aboove 6000). Depending on how cheap you can get the upgrade (if you sell the 6990m) you're looking at something around 200-300$.
Would you pay 300$ to double your gpu performance? -
in pounds its 397 incl fitting and loading drivers (about $600) then sell the 6990m. but there surely isnt much need to oc the card. its still a very good card at the minute
-
you dont have to oc the 7970m,at stock is almost 6400gpu score in 3dmark11 x2 performance of 6990m.
just look my sig.
if you oc it 7700gpu score-just amazing
-
You must have a tremendously good card then, most scores i've seen from people range between 5.5k to 5.8k stock.
What drivers are you using? -
with the new drivers 12.11beta4 you going to have this kind of performance
what laptop you have? -
I have a Medion Erazer x6811 (MSI 16F1 barebone). I'm currently waiting on my 7970m card which might never be here... seller hasn't even shipped yet
Awesome drivers. This puts the card squarely over GTX-680m in everything except max OC. (those cards sometimes still hit 8k in 3dmar11).
Can't wait to get my own. I'm rocking a crappy gtx-460m right now. -
7970M is cooler, is a hell lot more powerful, you get the benefit of the latest 12.11 driver enhancement plus future ones for GCN GPUs.
Whats not to like

Tsunade_Hime such bacon. wow
I would say depends on the games you play, TBH. Newest shooters like BF3, Metro, yes it would be beneficial. But older titles should be fine. My 5870M Crossfire in my R2 still plays all the games I want (SC2, Dota 2, TF2) at 1200p just fine, it's subjective.

The usage of money.... currently the number #1 problem in a everyday gamers life!
-
Why crappy?i have one too.
i keep it as back up
and i have a good gtx460m,its oc like hell
-
yeah the games i play are mainly up to date shooters and hoping farcry 3 and crysis 3. still blast on crysis and warzone too. i may have to part money for it. if its that much of an improvement for games over the 6990m theres no reason not to upgrade
-
Well, for one, i get below average performance on this card. And mine doesn't really OC well. +100mhz on core and i can say byebye to stability.
-
for example the clock was(if i remember well)at 820-840 and memory was insane 1900
i run some benches and i can say that it was a level like my 6970m.
and it was very stable at games at those clocks.
thats why i didnt sell it

Wow, that sounds awesome. I might try some memory overclock if no the core doesn't want to to go up. Not sure how useful that is though. Still, 1900 is insane.
7970m worth the upgrade from 6990m?
