yea see this a huge difference in what you said for clocks and what your test show.. show me a stable 1020/1650 bench of any kind and ill be a believer..

but right now your core is at 860 and memory is 1650.. not the 1020 you said..

Both of my 7970M are over-volted and it's working real nice. Nice benchmarks, bro.

....slickdude gets 1000 in some stuff otherwise runs at 995 and i think he said thats stock voltage.....1020 is not hard to believe with overvoltage

edit: dumb dumb you got 7970 in crossfire? i thought that wasn't done yet

it always shows 860 in the benchmark cause it wont kick my clocks in till it starts. Many 7970m have this in the benchmarks, look at other 7970m 3dmark links ....(dot dot dot

Is it really necessary to overclock the 7970m? Isn't it more than sufficient for any game out there at 1080p?

every 7970m OC 3dmark shows the core clock as lower cause for some reason it wont kick in till the program starts and 3dmark doesnt scan your system clocks during benchmarking, im using afterburner. It shows my clocks always at 860 and the vram at max, as soon as i stress, boom 1020. Do you really think i could hit those high scores with the core at 860? seriously?

EXAMPLE: http://3dmark.com/3dm11/3489699 this person ran at stock clocks, but notice the core clocks are at only 300

yeah and it shows ur core at 860 as well, do you believe me now? btw sick score

    im using 1075v vbios 900/1300....then i overclocked to 1020/1650

my card at stock voltage wont even overclock to 950, but bumping it to 1075v made it OC very well.

You will see larger differences in mem clocking because the chips themselves play a part. Before it was the IMC which is pretty similar on all chips.

The hynix chips are rated for 1250mhz and there are 8 of them and the slowest will set the max clocks. So you could see a large variation.

You could also see an improvement if you were brave and found some higher rated hynix chips.............

It isn't included. You can try to run the setup file but it will install everything except the display driver. I tried to mess with the inf files but failed. Installing via device manager works.

And the brightness issue is still here.

if you are on the 12.5 beta modded drivers, don't install the 12.6's because 3dmark11 and Vantage actually went down.

Skyrim did go up a few frames though

there's a link to the 12.5 beta 7900 modded drivers in my 7970m guide. Without disabling the integrated graphics, they may not work for you. You can try FN+F7 to dedicated, do a custom install and see if the "display driver" is an option to install.

They will increase your scores over the stock dell drivers.

EDIT: jaybee beat me to it lol

Hi dude. Does OC damage the card in anyway??? What did you did say the max stable clocks for gaming was again?
Should I set MSI AB to apply OC on startup or should I only apply the OC clocks when I start the game? I presume the latter will protect the card more right? Or does it matter? After all I just want to protect my card. Oh and the 7970m will be in a Clevo P170EM if that makes any difference.

temps are pretty much the only thing that will damage a GPU. You need to monitor your temps. 105C is thermal threshold and will ruin it. GPUS running at 80-90C are fine but the temps are still higher then you would like. If your gaming on and off those temps are not that bad but 24/7 that will reduce the life significantly. I like to keep it below 80C if i can but I fold on my gpu so its that way 24/7

Can you post temps? use speedfan/afterburner/gpu-z/hwinfo

observer, hopeless mentioned soemthing important...temps. Temps are a good indicator that you've overclocked too high.

Another indicator is stability. If you clock too high, you will freeze in games, 3dmark won't finish its run and/or get bsods.

My rule of thumb...as long as you don't overvolt, overclocking is harmless. Worse that happens is that you will freeze or bsod, so you restart and set the clocks lower.

From my experiments, 950/1400 is very reasonable for a 7970m. There are some that will go higher for the best bench scores, but at 950/1400, you essentially have a desktop 7870 / gtx 570. There is no need to really go higher. I would try to go higher only to see what the upper limit on your card is and then set it lower...this way, you won't over stress your card. My upper limit at stock voltage is 1ghz core, so setting it to 950 is reasonable for me

I have two reg folders in which the enableulps key may be found, 0000 and 0001. Only 0001 has the enableulps key in it.

Any case, I figured it out: there was an extra cfg file hanging out in my msi folder. Pushed up to 1010/1500 no problem yesterday (is a 3dmark11 score of 6662 about right for this speed?) Will try for higher today.

ULPS stands for Ultra Low Power State. You want to disable this if you plan on overclocking in MSI Afterburner
