I think we will see something toward the end of this year or maybe in January, but I think Amd will jump to 8xxx series directly.
There's no point for a new card giving the current gpu capabilities which are insanely fast and enough for everything you throw at it, either of you go green or red :)

The 685M would be using what desktop part? Since the 670 is used in the 680M, the only logical course of action would be the 680 desktop used in the 685M o_0

This is true. Since both cards seem to OC quite well there would be little point in releasing higher clocked versions and calling them 685M/7990M. At that point people might just flash their current 680M/7970Ms to the new speeds and *woohoo* new card.

900$ price point for an upgrade from 670M ==> 685M

And 1500$ for a standalone MXM anyone?

What I don't get though, is how is the 680M so overpriced. nVIDIA only needs to make a very small PCB with the same $400 card (GTX 670) and no cooling. It should cost less than 400$

Just OC it now. As it is now the 7970M is the 7870 GHZ edition. So running it at 950/1375 is way above what it normally would be.

I wonder if the 7970M has voltage control and is able to go 1000MHz+ stable on the core

Go ahead and try it. I'm way too wary of overvolting on a laptop.

he is talking about the factory costs i think.

Both the 7970m and 680m cost almost the same coming out of the factory in china...this coming from a production manager's mouth at tsmc. What ends up happening after that depends on what companies want to charge for it

And even at $725, it is ridiculous...but for me after shipping, tax, a new heatsink, mounting plate, thermal pads...if I bought retail, the cost would be well over $850...and my wife's question to this was: "Does it come with a laptop?"

It is a moot point right now for Alienware M17x R3 users as the 680m doesn't seem to be compatible with it. There is an active thread in the m17x forums. it appears to be a driver issue, but we dont know yet
