Im a student so i will basically be using it for music, movies and homework. However i do like to play Counter Strike and CS:S So heres my Question.
the Dell 17020 comes with:
128MB NVIDIA® GeForce 8400M GS
or
256MB NVIDIA® GeForce 8600M GT
Should i spend the Extra money and get the 8600 GT when i pretty much only play CS? What setting, Medium or High will i be able to run it in?
Oh and Finally will the MS office XP version i have at home, work on Windows Vista?

YES, get the GT.

Yes....if all you play CS, then you don't need to pay ~$100 more for the 8600M GT. The 8400M GS will let you play CS just fine. I don't know the exact settings, but I read on the forums here that many 8400M GS players run it great.
Depending on how old the XP version is...it MIGHT work on Vista. However, this is Microsoft we are talking about. I wouldn't be surprised if they made it so you have to buy the new version. -
Office XP should work with any version of vista

Any recommendations for the Inspiron 1720 compared to the Vostro 1500?
-
I'd say go with the 1500 if you want a smaller sized laptop that can basically have the same specs. Lower res...but that's not a big deal.
-
i run cs fine on my 64m gpu desktop fine, the 8400 should be more than enough for cs
-
I say if your going to get the 8400M GS get a Vostro 1400 or an Inspiron 1420, the only difference from those and the 1500 and 1520, is the graphics card. But I say go for the 8600M GT though just because if a newer game does come out you'll probably want to play it

i have a 8400M GS on my hp and CS 1.6 gets 99fps, on high settings i guess, well default settings but with higher resolution. hope that helps a bit?
