I was going to get a laptop with a 8600gt or hd2600 and still might... but am conserding downgrading to a 8400gs or gt. I just want to do casual gaming really, I play RTS games, mostly older like warcraft III which my curent computer sucks running. I also will play counter strike source, and the most demanding game i will be playing is probably call of duty 4.. So will the 8400 gt be able to run cod4 and at what settings? I just want it to be good enough to play smoothly. I know the 8600gt is a much better card but im impatient and want a laptop soon, and also am not a super gamer. Thanks for the help.

CoD 4 will have to be at lower graphics settings most likely, but will be playable. For reference I have the 8600M GT and can run CS:S on all high, 1680x1050, 4xAA/8xAF and never drop below 50 FPS.

Is that so? I can run Counter Strike Source on all high 1280x800 16QxAA/ 16xAF and i get 60fps w/vertical sync on.

And you will be able to run CoD4 on extra settings with an 8400M GT. Mine is a DDR3 which gives it an extra boost over performance over the DDR2 version.

But yeah, if its for casual gaming, get the 8400M GT, the GS is garbage (no offence other people). If u really like to play games then the 8600M GT is the way to go

8400gs is not very bad at all (also stays cool), but my question is if the 8400gs with GDDR3 can compete against 8600gt(with GDDR2) or HD2600(with GDDR2) well.

if the 8400gs with GDDR3 can at least peform similar to these 2 cards with 256mb GDDR2 , I will stick with it since I really care about heat generated by high end mobile GPUs.

but I am afraid if I am missing out somethig seriously huge.

Depends on the map. Run the HDR version of de_train and I guarantee you won't get that FPS consistently. Yeah of course you can peak higher, but first person shooters are not about max frame rates, it's about minimum and average.

    Keeping it simple, DDR2 8600GT tend to perform about 30% better than 256mb DDR3 8400GT (I've had both). In turn, 256mb DDR3 8400GT should perform about 60% better than DDR3 8400GS.

8400GS only has half the bandwidth and ROPs of 8400GT/8600GT, so is going to be slow (still work for casual gaming, though). Then, of course, even 8600GT is pretty "slow" compared to average desktop cards.... :(

No, if you put it in a fight agaisnt each other, 8600M GT will wipe the floor. There is no way the 8400M GS can match the 8600M GT's performance even if you overclocked the 8400M GS to the max, it still wouldnt be enough.

An 8400M GT will likely score similarly to an 8600M GS however, but not the GT.

If the 8600GT performs 60percent better than the 8400GS like Woodgypsy says , it is huge and more than enough to justify their price differential IMO.

And Thanks Miscolobo ,I am almost 90 percent sure that I want to get a 14.1 laptop with the 8600GT.

But is NVidia 8400GS still better than ATI HD2600?

First, your welcome. 2nd. The ATI HD2600 is said to perform 5% worst than the 8600M GT, thus it is better than the 8400M GS yet weaker by 5% than the 8600M GT

Thanks again , if the speed differnce between the 8600gT and ATI HD2600 is only 5 percent , then I will take the ATI HD 2600 since laptoppies with the ATI are usally much cheaper than lappies with the 8600GT here.

How much is the price difference? if its not by much, chuck out the extra few dollars and get yourself an 8600M GT.

well its sad then... my Dad bought Sony Vaio SZ with top specs (Intel C2D 2.4 Ghz) ..13.3 " @ 1280X800 native. .. he got only 8400M GS. with that much price.

I was looking forward to play COD4 but now i am disappointed that 8400M GS wont even handle Crysis?

Ouch that bites, no unfortunately he wont be able to run Crysis. infact, maybe at lowest settings but he will need an overclocked card to even pull it off.

you will be able to run CoD4 probably at low/medium

the reaal problem here (BKK) is just too limited selection and not much on line dealors so have to buy from a mall called Pantip plaza.

and if I ask something like Thinkpad T61p there, nobody knows what it is.

seems like if I want to get a 14.1 laptop with the NVIDIA 8600GT , then I will have to accept the down grade path of my CPU from T8300 to T7250......to get the ASUS F8SV4SO32, which also has a small 120gb HDd.

If I go for the HD2600, I can choose a faster CPU than the T7250 in the ASUSf8SV.

But if I want the ATI HD2600 , I will have to get either a HP 8510p or Toshiba A200 P542Tthat my thai friend bought 3 days a go...........it is ok but look horrible with funny looking glossy blue lid, and the HP is hugely over priced ,6510 is cheap but 8510 is very expensive here.

The A200 P542(T9300,2gb,320gbhdd) is priced around 1200US and the HP 8510p(T7500,2gb,250gb) is about 2400 us..

    I have DV2761tx and Toshiba satellite M200 E4311t ,A80 .etc.

but as my father told me that he sent me a thin and light laptop in last week(probably an HP since he is a big fan of the brand), I'd like to get a bit bigger one ,I usually like 14.1 or 13.3 but this time , I will go against that and get a 15.4 although 14.1 models are much cheaper here than 15.4.

To be honest, there is also acer aspire with the nVidia 8600gt available here but I just dont like Acer and Fujitsu.

If I can get a M1530 , it is probably the best but I can't find a dell here in BKK.

So I would have to buy another HP or another Toshiba , I dont really like them either , but there are no other options for me. I have no choice but have to buy a HP or a Toshiba again and agian.

wished I had gotten the Vostro1500 though.
