    Hey!

Im about to buy a Dell XPS M1330 ;) . It is really nice for moving around (yehey!) but very bad for gaming (bullpoo!)

What do you think about this card?

    Here are some questions:

    1.- Comparison to go7600
    2.- Comparison to Desktop DX9 GPU's
3.- Ability to run upcoming games (Crysis, Brothers in Arms, Unreal 7, Halo 2...)

THanks!! BTW, any info on any 13.3" or smaller laptop with higher graphics?

    1. Go 7600 (lower midrange) is significantly faster than the 8400m gs (upper low-end) but no dx10.

    2. Depends on what desktop gpu you're comparing to. An 8400 for desktop would be faster than the one for notebooks.

    3. 8400m gs will not play those games at even medium settings. At best, maybe 1024x768 with no AA or AF and a few other eyecandies turned off, making the game look terrible.

The best mobile gpu for 13.3" or smaller laptops is the 8400m gt, which comes close to a go 7600 but nowhere near enough to play the previously listed games at medium settings and 1280x800 or above resolution.

Hm i think the Sony VAIO FZ-180 has it, but VAIOs are so insanely expensive that you could easily get a larger notebook with kickass graphics for the same price. That's the only one i know of right now, but I'm sure there are others. Anyone else know?

Edit: wait, my bad. The fz180 is a 15.4".

The best GPU for 13.3" is the 8400M GS, and the XPS M1330 has it.

    It will play Halo 2.
    Oh I'm sorry, I don't have a $400 GPU; I guess I play 'terrible' games.

As someone who just had a laptop with a Go 7600 and currently has a laptop with an 8400GS, the performance difference isn't as large as people are making it out to be. Yes, you will take a hit, but it's about 10-20% slower than the 7600... not too significant. I get 35FPS in Half-Life 2 with everything maxed out except water, 2 X AA and 8 X AS.

As Dreamer said, though, if you want 13.3", it's the best available.

There will be the T61P 14.1" with the Nvidia Quadro FX 570M (equivalent to the 8600M GT)

My pc (P4 2.8Ghz, 1.5GB ram, 6600GT) scores about 3600 on 3DMark05, the Dell XPS M1330 with 8400M GS scores about 3000. So the 6600GT probably is a bit faster.

I guess that the 8400M GT will kill the battery off very efficiently on the 13.3".

It runs fine at a 1024x768 resolution and medium settings. I usually get around 50-60 FPS.

I'm starting to not worry about getting the "weaker" 8400M GS anymore...

im pretty sure even crysis will run on 8400gs and look fine, just dont expect to turn the settings high. its not as weak as some people make it out to be.

Alright, I'm probably going to opt for a weaker system than you, but do you think that would really make a difference in games? They're going to be GPU-limited with the 8400M GS, so how much of a difference would, for example, getting a T5250 processor make?

    Thanks.

if the 7400go 64mb can run oblivion on med 1028x768 i expect the 8400gs to do okay on most of the current games, but don't expect to play the latest game on highest setting :) . I am pretty sure that it would run C&C and company of heroes decently too. Hopefully SC2 as well. :)

it should barely make a difference, probably not even noticeable. thats processor, being that it is core 2 duo, is perfectly fine.

Alright. I just have two more concerns: RAM and hard drive. I think I'm going to go with 1 GB of RAM for now, and upgrade later since it's so much cheaper to do it myself than to buy whatever Dell wants to sell me.

As for my hard drive, upgrading to a 7200 RPM drive is quite a bit more money, but I don't know if it would really be worth it, especially since I play games. If I get a 5400 RPM drive now, can I upgrade to a 7200 RPM drive later? How would I do that, considering the OS and everything come pre-installed on the drive the laptop ships with? Could I just transfer everything from the old drive to the new drive and just go with it?

    Hmmm...

u can easily reinstall everything with the discs that comes with your laptop onto your new hard drive. That is how i normally do mine, but i know there are some other ppl who uses some programs that somehow take a snapshot of your hard drive and transfer everything onto your new one

exactly! People don't give the 8400m gs enough credit. I play all modern games (COD4, Gears of War, FEAR etc.) with extremely nice settings. On COD and GoW, I have 1024 x 640 with medium high settings (2x aa in COD!!!) for about 25-30 fps. In FEAR, i pretty much maxed everything out except for AA and AF. As for Crysis, it runs 20-25 fps on medium settings 800 x 600. Yea, your not getting the 200 fps on totally maxed out settings in COD like you do on a 9800GX2, but in all seriousness, your eye can only see about 20 fps so any higher is just pointless.

Its actual 25fps to keep a movie/video looking smooth. Aslong as it doesnt dip below this you shouldnt notice frame lag

I do notice the higher fps 40+ the smoother things run for gaming

The BenQ S41 has better GPU NV8600GS and is much cheaper than the Dell.

And , there is the LG P300 with the same gpu as in the BenQ.

Also, if you dont mind 14.1s, there are many with better GPU than the Dell's.

    1 Acer 4920G with ATI HD2400XT.

    2 ASUS F8 SN with NV9500gs.

3 ASUS F8 SP with ATI HD 3650.

    4 Toshiba M305 P series with ATI HD3650.

Also ,there is the HP DV3000T series with NV8400GS but with more memory 256mb GDDR3.

not quite right, the LG even reviewed at this site has much better gPU and Dell itself will release NV9300gs and I saw a few bench marks that showed me the 9300 would perform about 12percent better than the 8400gs.

if you do not mind the 8400gs , take a look at the new HP DV3006, it's a great well balanced laptop , as a whole , this one is a great machine and hard to beat.

also , the new HP design was great , more metalic and feturistic taste.

and I am sure it well built, expensive though.
