    8400M GS vs. desktop 6600

    Are they comparable in speed? (I'm thinking of the earliest plain Geforce 6600s). Is there any possibility that the 8400M is faster than the 6600?

    The earliest 6600 was a GT, iirc. Which model do you mean?

    They actually are pretty comparable in power, though I'm pretty sure that at stock clocks the desktop 6600 will scale better to higher resolutions, as it has higher memory bandwith (true of pretty much all desktop cards). At lower resolutions and in newer games though, it's possible that an 8400M-GS could match, or maybe even manage to pull ahead of the 6600.

    Which laptop specifically are you looking at?

    My Quadro NVS 140M (roughly an 8400M GT, but with a 64-bit memory bus) is easily on par with my old GeForce Go6 800, unless you start turning the res up too high or applying anti-aliasing (due to the memory bus), which I know from experience is noticeably faster than a desktop 6600GT. So using some complex comparisons, the 8400M GS should be markedly faster than a non-GT 6600, and on par with if not slightly faster than the 6600GT, until you crank the resolution too far up.

    Sorry for asking this here but, if an 8400GS can match at least on not high resolution to an 6600GT, this means (obviously) and 8600GT can easily beat an 6600GT...

    By how much? even an GDDR2 8600GT???

    Sorry my english's quite poor =P

    8600m GT can beat a 7600 GT, probably more comparable to a 7800GS.

    Yup, an 8600M-GT, even a DDR2 one, is probably at least twice as powerful as the 6600.

    Oh, I mean the earliest of the plain 6600 cards, like an Asus EN6600. I have it in my desktop.

    That makes sense. I'm not looking at the performance of a specific laptop, just trying to get a feel for the capabilities of current cards as compared to my desktop.

    Excellent. The 6600 has been sufficient for my needs on the desktop, so the 8400M should be good enough in a laptop.
