Hey guys, ive gotten the guts to push the 8400M GT to

    704/855...yeah i know im crazy :p

Tried Crysis and boy is it PLAYABLE!

    I get like 20~30+ fps...maybe low 20's in fight scenes...anyway i enjoy it :)
    on like Med/High settings

I play on maybe pushing the memory to 900....if i have the guts

Anyway, i got my 8400M GT to pass 4000 3Dmarks...

I think it was on 1280x800 LOL! but anyway, im still happy :)

1280x1024 wouldnt make THAT much of a difference, maybe id go down by, say 200~300points? I could climb that up with new drivers hopefully.

then id have an authentic 4k..

But oh well, I IS HAPPY :D

I think youd take a bit more than a 300 point hit at WXGA, but nice job regardless.

Well, i wouldnt really care that much considering 1280x800 is my native monitor resolution...meaning i cant get more than that lol. So i cant play any game higher than 1280x800 so theres no point.

I think id get a nice 700 points shaved off in 3Dmark lol if i switched to 1280x1024..ouch?

    Thats about 3300 -_-..

i think my card at this point is equivalent to a 8600M GT DDR2.. isnt it? regardless of the pipelines

no, not really, and I'm willing to bet your card was artifacting quite badly.. Mabe you could overclock your GPU to get a higher score, but it doesn't even matter if your getting artifacts.

As mentioned in one of your other threads, the temp sensors are only on the Core and not the memory. need i say more?

btw.. on the 1280x1024 vs 1280x800 in 3dmark 06 thing.. I don't know if it's any relation, but my desktop gets 15230 in 1280x720, and 14440 in 1280x1024, then again, it is a higher end pc, but there definately is a significant performance different between the two atleast in 3dmark.. So mabe 1280x800 could be show a significant increase in score over the default..

Use AtiTool to scan for artefacts.
Even though the card is not overheating, the components are stressed at more than their nominal values and that decreases the lifespan regardles.
As Dexgo, a master OCer in the Sager forum said : I OCed all of my cards.
    And they`re all fried. :D

If hes artifacting wouldnt that means his gpu is getting too hot? And then in that case would it downclock itself anyway? So then as such i dont think his score would be as high.

    ...you hope :)

your card is going to die within a few hours running at that much higher than stock speeds. I would ease off ocing, or you will hve no more laptop.
It has happened to me before on one of my laptops, and now I dare not to overclock my graphics cards.

I hope you realize you are going to have to spend $300 or so to get a new 8400Gt, so start saving up. It is not worth it overclocking to play a game, especially one which is designed to run at much higher specs than your laptop has.

I have my laptop to 650/700, and have had it that way since February. I haven't noticed anything as far as problems, and temps stay around 73 degrees. I also downclock when not in game.

ATI tool isn't all that reliable, actually. Well anyway, FZ seems to be pretty good at handling heat, and my ancient 9500pro shows no ill effects after 24/7 OC...But do it at your own risk! Personally I am too scared.

I'm on my way OC my card right now but I found many problems regarding drivers that won't let you overclock. As of now I'm on 174.74 and they won't let me OC.

Did you just used atitool and/or rivatuner or did you have to mod the bios? ('cause that I won't do =P). I'm going to try with your driver version. But as far as it goes, 174.74 won't let me overclock. Whenever I move the sliders on atitool or rivatuner, they revert to their possition when I click on "apply" or "accept"...

169.04 works for most people who have overclocking issues with the 8 series. Try 'em out ;)

Most of the people who overclock to those temperatures and post about them end up frying their cards and we never see them on the forums again :) . I personally would not risk it , but to each their own.

Why are you pushing your card so far anyway? Your sony in probably a very nice machine, i wouldn't want to damage mine. I have my clocks set to 600\800 and wouldn't push them any further for 2-3fps in a game and *definatly* not for a benchmark:\

Remember your gpu has a fixed current consumption and increasing your clocks too much will put a significant strain on your card. 3Dmark and most games won't push your card to it's absolute limit so don't take five minutes of gameplay as a suitable stress test.

    ...Maybe build a desktop? :D

What im planning to do is switch between profiles

ex. when i need performance, id switch to 704/855 for games like Crysis..this wont happen on a daily basis so i think im kinda fine..

ill let my casual OC be 600/731 which is more reasonable.

This way i have power on demand :)

Wise decision sir ;) Don't spend more time messing around with clocks and game settings then actually playing the games:O

Have TF2? Looks great on a stock 8400m GT maxed(ish) and is sooo addictive :) Played it from 12 midnight to 6 in the morning today(or last night if you prefer)

It looks a little too childish for my gaming needs. I know it is a pretty kickass game...but i just dont want to chuck the cash for it. Im waiting for Battlefield Heroes :)

The 'childish' look is exactly what keeps TF2 from getting boring. It has that animation style a-la Pixar's 'The Incredibles' and it keeps you from ever taking yourself or the game too seriously. That's why it's so fun.

If the look is what put you off, don't even try Battlefield Heroes. While the art direction isn't identical, both games have the Pixar "Incredibles" look.

I don't know, usually games are only "too childish" to play when you are either a child yourself or a grouchy senior. :D
