So im either going to get a toshiba with a go 7600, or a hp with a 343 mb 8400 gs. the hp is slightly less priced, but i know the card is not as powerful as the 7600. If i go with the hp, will i be able to run games like half life 2, battlefield 2 and doom 3 on high settings?
specs for the hp:
Intel(R) Core(TM) 2 Duo T7100 (1.8GHz/2MB L2Cache)
2GB DDR2 System Memory 383MB
NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GS
Toshiba:
intel® Core™2 Duo Processor T5300(1.73GHz,
2 gigs of ram
nVIDIA® GeForce® Go 7600 with 256MB dedicated graphics memory

any help? The hp is also smaller than the toshiba, which is another perk...just need to know if the 8400gs will get the job done.
-
I'd say the 8400M GS. People say it's almost the same as the 7600 performance-wise, and its more future proof since its DX10.
-
^^ agreed. Go with the 8400, but you should tr and get the 8600m if you can find one for a reasonable price.
-
thanks guys. The only comp with an 8600m in my price range is a zepto, but when i go to see the final cost of it, (shipping, taxes, etc.) it ends up being around 1600 dollars, which is way out of my range.
8400 it is...so it will run hl2 on max? -
The Geforce 8400m GS is near equivalent of the previous gen, 7600.
Also, the Geforce 8400m is directx 10, so it's more future proof.
And regarding the 8600m GT, you can expect to see them on the Dell Inspiron 1520, that just came out recently. -
This topic brings up a question for me. I am hoping to get the game Lost Planet for the PC. From others I have heard that they can run the demo on high settings with the Nvidia 7600. If this is true can the 8400 do this aswell?

Keep careful mind that I stated near equivalent.
The model that is equivalent with the 7600 would be the Geforce 8400m GT, not GS.
I'm merely stating that the performance is somewhat similar to that of the 7600.
However, benchmark results doesn't actually equate to real gaming performance. In fact, the gaming performance difference between the two should be quite close, with possible variations between 1-5 fps.
Granted that the performance is quite similar, losing a couple frame rates wouldn't be that big of a difference since it's also slightly cheaper, and it's more future proof with its compatibility with DirectX 10.
Of course, like I stated above, you could go for the Geforce 8600m GT with the newly released Dell Inspiron 1520. -
would it be wise to go for the dell, with a core 2 duo (t5250) processor, 1.5 gigs of ram and a 8600 gt? will the ram slow it down much?
-
1.5gb is sufficient, but if you'd want the best gaming experience...then definitely opt for the 2gb ram upgrade.
Of course, you could always purchase RAM far cheaper off Newegg.com and then upgrade it yourself.
I'd also recommend getting a processor upgrade, try to get at least the T7100 model. It'll improve your gaming performance somewhat, but it'll definitely increase your non-gaming experience.
The only real bottleneck for gaming is the GPU, so even with those specs, you can expect a great gaming experience nevertheless. However, the non-gaming experience may be a bit lacking, depending on your tastes, especially with Vista. -
Get the 8400...it's pretty close to the 7600 in terms of performance, plus you will get DX10 support for the newer games coming this year.
-
I'd opt for the 8400 as well. The only problem is that some people believe that, despite the dx10 support, it won't be able to run the new games anyways. Is this true?
I always thought that the 8400 would be able to render decent resolutions at low settings.
8400gs or go 7600
