I searched around on the forums and i couldn't find out which would be better for gaming. I know the 8400 GX is dx10 so will be able to play future games better but in terms of current games which will work the 8400 GX or the 7900 GS and if i were to get the 7900 GS how long would it last before i had to get a dx10 laptop to play new games.

Well an 8600gt is more comparable to a 7900gs than an 8400gx which is probably like a 7600
-
Well, the laptops im looking at are the sony FZ series with the 8400 GX and the Dell Inspiron e1705 with a 7000 gs. Could you give any advice as to which of the cards would be better for gaming.

The 7900GS is the winner hands down but will that be so for next generation games using DX10 rendering?
So now that the 7900GS is last gen you have to consider how well it will perform in next gen games. -

Then you have to consider this:
A game in DX9 rendering on high settings.
A game in D10 on medium settings.
What would look better and give you a possible advantage in graphics? -
I would imagine a D10 card on medium would be better because of the advanced rendering (especially shadows) but I wouldn't know very much about that.

I think that's really going to come down to how the game is designed. I think virtually every game for the next year or two will be playable on DX9 and eventaully DX10. If the game is designed for DX10 and then watered down for DX9, obviously the DX10 will be much better. There are only a very few of these games in the works that people are talking about. It looks like the majority of the new games are still being designed for DX9. They may enable a few new bells and whistles in DX10, but I think that will be pretty minimal - and when you concider the hit that Vista takes I think it will be pretty even. That said the 7900 is a more powerful card than the 8400, so I'd go with 7900 if I had to pick right now. If you can wait a few weeks the 2600 benchmarks should be more clear (and more widely implemented) and that may be a better option.
