    hi all
    here is the problem
i got nvidia geforce 8400m gs in my dv2690ee notebook
    im running vista 32
when i go to the display settings and then the advanced setting
i can find that i have

    831mb total graphics memory
    64mb dedicated video memory
    0mb system video memory
    767mb shared system memory

and my problem is with that (((767mb shared system memory)))

does it means that if im playing agame and it need more than 64mb (lets say 128mb) the dedicated memory will take from the shared memory , im i right??

because i heard that the shared memory is not needed by the pc

but when i plaY games such as runes of magic which needs 128mb, the game is so slow and i have to use the low quality so i can be playable

the question is : if it is called shared memory then why the pc cant access this memory?

is it vista that is using all that memory?

if i installed xp professional 32 will it be easier to take from the shared memroy?

if i added more ram memory will it be usefull?

    :(  :(

    please help im so confused

In addition to the 64MB of discrete memory your 8400M has, it is dynamically allocating system memory for video purposes. This is part of Nvidia's TurboMemory technology and is perfectly normal.

Note that if you add the dedicated VRAM and shared system memory together, you get the total graphics memory (831MB) that your GPU can access at any time.

Unless your driver has the functionality built-in (rare) or you have a BIOS option for it, there is no way to control the amount of memory your GPU is using. It's best to leave it alone.

    Yes.

The game is slow because you have an 8400M GS. Shared memory means that if the GPU runs out of memory (64MB in this case), it can use system memory. The problem is that system memory is MUCH slower than GPU memory, so much in fact, that it only helps in really low end GPUs such as IGPs.

    No,
    No,
    Not likely

The WEI is a useless benchmark. Don't use it as a way to gauge your system's performance.

The laptopvideo2go drivers are quite good and I recommend using one of them. Post your questions on updating your drivers here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=258626

Very rarely does a simple driver update allow you to go from low to high settings....

As mentioned above, updated drivers rarely bring anything but incremental performance improvements. Also, I would recommend ignoring WEI as crash stated earlier as it can give different scores for identical laptops.

I think you're seeing such a great performance increase because you may not even have had old drivers
