I'm trying to decide between the Sony FZ190 and the new Dell 1520. I love playing games, but wouldn't exactly call myself an "extreme" gamer. I play BF2 and BF2142, Oblivion, and generally am playing an MMO. Will the 8400 that comes in the FZ190 be able to play these games, and handle newer ones that come out in the future? I realize that the 8600 will be a better card, but is the 8400 still good?

From what I've heard, performance is somewhere around a Go 7600.

Well if you are worried about future proofing your machine for future games and good performance in the games you currently play I would recommend the 8600.

The 8400 is a mainstream card so it should be able to play MMO for a little, but I'd go with the 8600 GT

My advice is to definately go for the Inspiron 1520. The card in the FZ is really what turn me off to be honest. I was going to buy one myself, FZ190 CTO. However, the 8400M GT would just not cut it for me. I need 8600M GT or higher for my needs.

Hopefully they will be out tomorrow. The Dell will probably cost a lot less.

You'll regret getting the 8400 when all the DX10 games start coming out...the 8400 will fall way behind. 8600GT should keep you happy for quite a while.

All right, thanks. That's what I thought, but I just really like the FZ! Guess it's a dell for me though.

Yeah, if you liked the FZ190, then most likely, the Inspiron 1520 will satisfy all your needs.....except for the iffy build quality and support from Dell.... :(

8400 GT is slightly (very slightly) behind a Go 7600 in terms of performance. The 8600 GT is definitely a performance card. If you plan on having your laptop for a good deal of time and are absolutely fine with what you're seeing, get it.

I've looked at other laptops (Asus and Compal) and while they both seem to give similar/slightly better configs than the Dell, I've had two absolutely horrible experiences with my last two PCs (which weren't from major companies) and I think that I want to stick with a company I'm really familiar with for this purchase, even if it means sacrificing a bit performance-wise.

well that been said both asus and sager are well known laptops you need to search this forum. And to sacrifice performance is that the main reason u want a laptop for it to be eficient and perform well in my opinion i would go with the sager 2090 its a good laptop and good support. What i would advise you to do is to check out the forums and You will get a feel of these laptops ok but id say the sager seeing that it has a 8600gt which can be overclocked am i am sure ur gona want to play crisis so check it ok. Does any manufacturer offer the 8600GT in a 14.1" notebook? That's the main issue for me, I don't want to go above 14.1", so the 8400m is basically the best thing I can get.

well not that i know of, the heat the 8600gt produces would be too much for a 14.1'' laptop so for now the 8400 is your best bet actually what will u be using this machine for any gaming? if so what games?

What games will you be playing and how long do you need it for?

The FZ is a better notebook in general then dell's inspiron lineup.

well its seems like you guys looking for laptops should try compromising you will not get the perfect laptop so u should evaluate the products and see which one suits you the most. The said is if it is trust issues that bothers you take time to call and research the seller also consult the forums they will help you, or a smaller notebook size and settle for a lesser powerful computer u WILL NEVER FIND THE PERFECT LAPTOP just one that suits your needs.

I have the same dilemma with these 2 laptops: Vaio Fz and Dell 1520. I´m not a gamer but a like to play games. Perhaps, i like a stylish laptop (because inspiron 1520 is big and heavy) so will go for the Vaio Fz.

I have a FZ190 CTO and here are my benchmarks without overclocking and with the gpu driver version 101.28.
    3dmark05: 4261
    3dmark06: 2636
    Pcmark05: 5613

Hopefully it will help you with your options. For me the FZ suits my needs as I wanted a light, good performance, and stylish notebook. I do play games but I don't consider myself to be a hardcore gamer. Generally, I tend to think that hardcore gamers prefer build and use desktop PCs.

Your laptop actually gets a higher 3dmark06 score than a 8600m GS with GDDR2 ram if it was benchmarked at 1280x800/1024. What was the res?

Well if you like everything about the Sony over the Dell except for the graphics then I'd say go for the Sony. Both graphic cards will probably be get 'old' at around the same time - maybe the 8600GT will last a few months longer.
If you want to play serious games, then get a desktop.

8400GT in FZ uses DDR3, running at 450 core /600 ram. DDR2 8600GS usually run at core 500-600/ram 400, so it is normal for 8400GT in FZ to perform better than DDR2 8600GS - only differences between 8400GT and 8600GS is clock speed. I can confirm his 3Dmark - likely at 1280x800 (he gets bit better score due to faster CPU, though).

Not sure which information you're asking for, but the clock speeds are from nVidia.
nVidia only designed it for use with GDDR3 memory, however it appears some notebook manufacturers either downclocked that memory or used lower quality DDR2 or GDDR2 instead.

Source to support the statement that the 8400M GT in the FZ utilizes GDDR3.

Thanks, I see that many people are claiming this, and the clock rates seem to indicate this, I'd just like to see some documentation if someone had a link.

I'm interested in this notebook as I'm searching for a new purchase.

From what I can tell the FZ does not have an LED back lit screen, but I've been read that the screen is one of the most beautiful around.

if you wanna high the use lapto life for games betwen 1 or 2 years choose the 8600m gt(128bits) double bus that 8400m gs(64bits) and the firts have 32 miniprocessor (streams called by nvidia) the second has the half 16 minprocessors(streams) so the 8600m gt is almost the double of powerfull that the 8400m gs is like have too cards in one
