Does anyone think that getting a high resolution (1920 x 1200) screen with an 8600 GT card with DDR2 (specifically, I'm looking at the Dell Inspiron 1720) would be a problem? I understand that the 8600 GT might have a problem with top-of-the-line games at that resolution, but since lowering the resolution, if necessary, for certain games is always an option, is it worth getting the higher resolution screen (which is supposed to be terrific) for the 90% of the time I won't be gaming?

    i would consider it.

another thing you can think about is that with a very high resolution screen, the blur effect of interpolation will be less pronounced.

If you are doing CAD work or image editing I would highly consider it.

Thank you both for the quick responses. I'm actually considering the question more from the opposite direction- I want to get the higher resolution screen; I just want to make sure it's not a waste/bad decision to do so when the graphics option is an 8600 GT rather than something more powerful.

The 8600m GT can handle it. Most people that i have seen debating about it choose the higher res, and they say that it was the right choice. Its really up to you though, but IMO, the 8600m GT can handle it.
