8600 gt in desktop terms

Since laptop graphic cards are less powerful than desktop cards, what card on a desktop would be comparable to the 8600 gt on a laptop???

in performance terms, its hard to say exactly. is there an 8500 gt somewhere? maybe that card.

you can just overclock the 8600m gt and get it to about the desktop level of performance.

 

8500GT is weaker than 7600GT, so i'll have to say the closest thing to a 8600M GT is an overclocked 7600GT.

 

that sounds about right. but they are so fundamentally different.

that holds true for games that came out before the 8600m gt. upcoming games will likely behave differently.

 

The 8500GT performs worse than the 6600GT is most games, 64bit bus...

ok i don't know! i don't have an 8500 gt! speculation! I was just trying to say its a little slower than the desktop variant.

 

BTW the 8700M GT is in between a desktop 8600gt and a desktop 8600gts.

8600gt - 540core/1180shader/700mem
8700m gt - 625core/1250shader/800mem (dual-rank bus....donno if it makes any difference)
8600gts - 675core/1450shader/1000mem

 

I thought 8700M gt was on par with 8600 GTS.

oh just curious- is the shader clock a function of the core clock (2x core), or a separate clock entirely?

ie. can you change the shader clock (by changing the core clock, perhaps)?

 

It is related to the core clock, i.e. you change the core, you change the shader.

i didnt realize i was easily passing the stock desktop version. i match the core clock and pass the memory by about 15% without even blinking. it could still go a long ways up...

 

It is also a seperate clock though, at least on the 8800 it is. The core does affect it though. You can apparently alter it even more if you flash the bios though.

 

i have a 7600gs on my desktop, and my new laptop has a 8600m gt. Id say this

desktop 7600gs < 8600m gt < 7600gt desktop

The 7600gt is a pretty fast card on a desktop if you get an XFX one. And tbh, this 8600gt doesnt really CRUSH my 7600gs, but however my drivers suck on my 8600gt, i use stock, and i run at 1680. But it is better despite some problems i have with oblivion.

EDIT: HOWEVER, i forgot to mention my laptop uses the DDR2, for that statement i made is true, but if you have the GDDR3 version of the 8600, then yes im sure its better than the 7600gt with good drivers.

 

the stock (101.xx) drivers are really bad. really bad.

15x.xx-16x.xx are much better.

so the 8600m gt ddr2 with stock drivers is somewhat (but not crushingly) faster than a desktop 7600 gs. interesting.

im really dissapointed, i just switched to 158.36 drivers and my performance basically did not improve AT ALL!! I did some OC in rivatuner, and went to 600/500, and oblivion went way faster, BUT then i got freeze and say some artifacts, so now im back at stock, im really dissapointed here! i KNOW it can be way better just the drivers and vista are doing me in. The problem i have with oblivion is that i get these annoying minor hitchs no matter what the area, or what the framerate. My doom3 performance is not stellar either its basically like the speed of my desktop with the 7600gs, yet im running at 1680, my frame will be fine, then i get huge dips down to low 30s or high 20s, and this is unacceptable, the overclock only made it go up 5 fps, nothing big.

 

i haven't had any problems maxing out doom 3 or quake 4 at 1440x900.

windows xp and 162.18 drivers

i might recommend something even newer for vista

im mean doom3 is not slow or anything, i just have the fps counter from the console command running, and stuff near steam and if its a large room it go down to 30, and no i dont use AA, i just run on high, same settings as desktop. My frame usually 60 capped or in 50s, yet this is basically comparable to my desktop, and i think it should not dip, 1680 or not, 32 stream processor for pete sakes!@

 

alot of the desktop 8600GT comes factory overclocked to 600-620 core and 800 memory.

 

do you have the latest patches for the game? windows updates?

i recommend trying an updated driver as well.

 

i have patched all my games to the latest like doom3 1.3. but i cant seem to patch oblivion, says my files are diffierent, yet i used a fixed exe because i dont like putting in cds to launch my game.

css runs very fast.

 

Oblivion gives me installation crap all the time as well. Make sure you download the correct patch. There's a UK and a US version of the patches.

 

just to add in, I have an e-vga 7600 gt with 256 mb gddr3 in my desktop. I haven't ran any tests to compare with the 8600m gt but so far the 8600 is playing call of duty 2 / fifa 2007 / and top spin 2 at higher resolutions more smoothly than my 7600 gt ever did.

 

thats good news for me

keep in mind that with just a mild overclock you can get desktop 8600 gt performance. so whatever that level of performance is, you can expect very close to that on the mobile card.

 

i really dont have that many moderns games, do you think that is why? i dont think it will beat a 7600gt XFX XXX oc

 

if an a mobile 8600m gt (underclock lower than mobile clock spec) wont beat a heavily overclocked desktop 7600 gt, i see no problem.

 

i am sure GDDR3 8600gt will beat that 7600gt, but me no... hmm... well i dont really have that many games to try this card on, most of them are older when the radeon 9800 serious ruled the world ehehe
