I've tried the last three sets of 32bit drivers for my new vostro 1500, the 165.01's, the 163.44's and the 163.16's combined with the associated inf files, and everytime on install I get the error message that the drivers do not support my card (8600GT).

Does anyone else have this problem, or is it solvable? or does it have anything to do with me having uninstalled my dell drivers first so the card shows up as generic gfx card?

I'm sorry, but I don't think you understand.

I extract the files to a temp folder, move the inf to that folder, then try and install.

Unless there's a special 8600GT inf that isn't the same as the one that is on the driver page?

    Did you:
-extract the drivers to a temp folder
-copy the modded inf over the inf file in that temp folder
-install from the setup.exe in that temp folder

    ??

When you are copying the .inf file try to literally copy it instead of just dragging as dragging may just produce a shortcut. Highlight the modded .inf file, CTRL+C, go to the temp folder with the install application and CTRL+V and then "Copy and Replace" when prompted. You shouldn't have a problem installing due to uninstalling the other driver because that is what's recommended. Good luck.
