    Selective startup, few flat restarts later, less things running:

    Somebody recently published a 3DMark06 score in a review, whilst not as high as your score, I was convinced it was wrong.

    http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=3918

    They got 3,319, with stock drivers, when I get 3,287 with BIOSHOCK drivers, on my Acer 5920, or 3188 with Acer Stock drivers.

    Why is the score so high? Anyone know?

    Because you're not running at the real resolution =p. Your score means nozzing!

    So you're saying 1280x854vs 1280x1024 makes that big a difference, over 1000 points?

    Yes. Y-axis pixels or vertical resolution seems to take more toll on the GPU than an increase in horizontal resolution. Now test it and post it again with the respective screenshots.

    so do it at 1440x900, theres about a 1% difference between 1280x1024 and 1440x900. but you do need a full version of 3dmark06, or you can attach a seperate monitor that does support 1280x1024

    On my old 17in CRT - a quick run, not disabling all processes.

    is that OC'd because that is a pretty damn good OC if you are running everything in 3dmark06 standard.

    sheldon77 it's oc you can tell in his screen shot core 630 memory 530.
    Btw nice oc joebusby :)
    Just a quick question what's the temp of your GPU when running at oc? Do you run this oc normally or just for 3dmark?

    Have you tried undervolting? Or is this just toying with the video only? I'm planning on trying the same thing. I don't want to do any of that yet on my Vostro 1500 that I just got because it's getting exchanged. The screen is TERERIBLE. Backlight washout bottom 20-25% of screen and top 10%, and it's got a terrible yellowish tint to everything. My wife's Acer Aspire 5100 looks 200x better.

    I wouldnt know how to undervolt, but surely that would give it even less power to overclock - wouldn't I want to overvoltage? (I come from PC overclocking)

    I have a dodgy screen also (grainy) and a technician is coming today, so better lose atitool for 20mins :D. I'd like to keep this one though, I think I have a very usable 8600 chip.

    Also to ask, why am I getting such low temps? After just running an entire 3dm, my temps barely go over 60. Am I right in guessing that ATItool is reporting the system temp not the chip temp?

    Also, when he gets here and the lcd he brings is inevitably another grainy screen, I'm considering threatening with the return, seeing what happens. See what he can do.

    Well ATI monitors my temps. I switched from Riva Tuner because it was telling me the same thing, only not monitoring my clocks correctly. ATITool also did this, but then I fixed that by running it as an administrator. Maybe Riva will work better as an admin.

    Both of them reported my temps low. I'll try nTune now.

    That 3dmark score just after obtaining temp on gpu was 65ish Celsius.

    Thats cool, my windows vista performance index for the gfx went from 4.7 to 5.7.

    But now limited by the HDD. Damn 5400rpm ****. Wonder if intel turbo memory would help.

    joebusby what was your room/environment temp? Do you have cooler pad sit underneath laptop?

    EDIT: This is my result of overclocking I had to format my laptop cuz I couldn't overclock no matter what. This is freshly formatted and installed OS only minimal application loaded so far.

    System Setup:
    Testing Gear in sig
    Windows XP SP2 32bit:
    RivaTuner 2.03
    forceware 101.08 (stock driver)
    Room temp 30C
    GPU idle temp around 58C

    Testing game: FEAR 1.0 retail (I haven't had time to download patch and update my driver yet).
    Everything is maxed except FSAA and soft shadow turn off. Resolution 1440x1050.

    @core 475 mem 400
    min 23
    avg 36
    max 68

    @core 520 mem 410
    min 24
    avg 38
    max 72

    @core 561 mem 440
    min 26
    avg 41
    max 78

    @core 600 mem 470
    min 27
    avg 44
    max 83

    @core 600 mem 500
    min 29
    avg 45
    max 85

    @core 620 mem 510
    min 31
    avg 48
    max 91

    @core 630 mem 520
    attempt failed game freeze.
    After each test GPU temp reach around 76C~78C compared to stock speed 73C~75C.

    I'll upload pics later and perhaps update my driver and patch and maybe Half life 2 once I get home (still at work lol).

    I run hl2 fully for a few hours at 630 with no crashes.

    It's on a wooden table, with no excess cooler. Two usb plugins, in a warmish (centrally heated, about 23c room).

    The latest from lv2g. Like 160.54 or something, I can't remember. My temps never go above about 65, so im guessing theres a glitch in my monitors.

    The only modern game I've tried is the company of heroes demo, which I did everything on high/ultra, 2xaa 2xaf, 1440x900 no slowdown at all, totally fluid. Dunno exact framerates, i hate having counters, it ruins immersion.
