Which card is faster in real world applications (gaming performance), the 8600M GS with 256mb GDDR3 at full clocks (as found in the Samsung R70 for example) or the 7700go with 512mb GDDR2 as found in the Asus A8Js/G1p? As well, please take into consideration that both will be used with 2GB memory, but the 8600M GS would be in a system with Vista whereas the 7700go would be in XP. I already know about the DirectX10 capability of the 8600M GS, and I also know that it most likely will not be fast enough to display the new eyecandy anyway.
As well, which card would be expected to run hotter? Which card would draw more power? Thanks!

I've heard from a lot of sources that the 8600 GS is a complete disappointment while the 8600GT is fine. I personally would go with the 7700. It is last gen... but I doubt the 8600 GS would run any DX10 games well enough to show off all the new features. And I'm pretty sure the 7700 draws more power. It's basically an overclocked 7600 with more pipelines.

the 8600m gs 256mb is definitely a faster card than the go 7700. the margin by which it is faster is up for debate, but its definitely both cooler running and noticeably faster.
however, factoring in the vista performance hit, both cards might actually end up with the same performance. its hard to say. putting the 8600 on vista will certainly level those two cards in terms of what they can practically accomplish.
still, the 7700 will draw more power and run hotter. the fact that it has more ram doesn't matter at all. neither card is fast enough for 512 megs. -

Go with the M GS if the memory is clocked at 700. I'm always experimenting with higher clock speeds and I have reached a max of 3510 3dmark 06 so far. The 7700 will draw more power. But I don't know about the temps. Mine reaches a ceiling temperature of 83 under load, but that's overclocked. I would say about 80 under load when it's at stock clock.

Performance wise they're nearly identical. However, with 2GB the GS can turbo cache for more memory if needed and has a better feature set.

Ah. Keep waiting for the LG R500 delivery then. Was almost going to just cancel that after the fifth delay and just get an A8Js.
