8600M GT - Whats the desktop equivalent?

I'm trying to decide if the portability of a 15.4 is going to be worth being limited to an 8600m gt. I've never had a laptop before, but i build desktops fairly regularly.

So my question is: which desktop nvidia card will the 8600m gt most likely perform like? I'm hoping its kind of on par with a 7800gt...? (i guess we'll assume GDDR3)

Thanks for the help. BTW, i looked at the stickied video card comparison, but i'd much rather have a comparison to a desktop card.

Not up to a 7800GT, definitely much better than my old ATi 9600XT though.

 

the desktop factory OCed 8600GT is about equal to a desktop 7800GT in performance, the GDDR3 version of 8600M GT is slightly worse than the 8600GT desktop(475 vs 600 core, 1400 vs 1600 memory)

 

8600M GT is right around a Go 7900GS, which is comparable to a desktop 7600GT.

 

That's good to know. I'm replacing/supplementing my desktop, which has a 6800GT, so it will at least be a lateral move in the graphics department.

 

My GDD3 8700M GT has a 625 core and 1600 memory. So thats a 8600GT desktop ?

if you want a dx10 card equal to the laptop 8600gt, I believe it is the desktop 8600gs (from what other forums have said)

you can do some searches to find that out

and a note- the 8600gt is not equal to a 7900gs, which is quite a bit more powerful and will be far more capable of higher resolutions

 

Oh...I've been comparing the 8600M GT to the Go 7900GS in my old E1705 and they have been pretty close...

Also, apart from comparing core/memory speeds, make sure you compare the memory interface as well, as far as I know all 8xxxM series cards have 64 or 128-bit interfaces. All series 8 desktop cards up to the 8600GTS have a 128-bit memory interface but I can't speak for 6 or 7 series desktop cards, all of the info is on the nVidia website though.

Yup about the 7800GT and the 7800GTX 256MB, wich is only a little OCed 7800GT (the 512MB is clocked way higher).

But since the 7800GT/X 256 have somewhat low speed GDDR3 (1000mhz for GT and 1200mhz for GTX 256), they don't take full advantage of the 256bit bus compared to the 128bit of the 8600. The GTS is clocked at 2000mhz so it has the same bandwith as the 7800GT for exemple

For unknown reasons, the 8600GT (1400mhz @128bit) takes higher res/AA better than the 7800GTX(1200mhz @ 256bit)

 

I see, I only had a 1440x900 screen, and Dell underclocked the Go 7900GS a bit, maybe that's why I wasn't seeing the better side of the Go 7900GS.

Also, if you flash the bios you can have a Go 7900 GSX which is comparable to the 7900GTX, but I assumed we were talking about stock clocks here.

 

Are you sure, my 7800GTX though overclocked can still push games in 1920x1200 resolution I would like to see a 8600GT do that
