Last weekend I received my new Seagate Momentus 7200.3 HDD and I finally installed vista 64 bit on it, since then I'm searching a good x64 driver for my 8600M GT, I tried A LOT of driver (the latest 177.xx series, 178.xx series,...) and I get a strange issue with almost all of them, TF2 is playable (Could be a lot better but It's mostly of the time playable), Crysis is "playable" (in the lower 20's fps with higher quality tweaks) but some games like cod2, cod4 are NOT playble, in cod2 I get 6 fps on lowest quality on 1024x768, on cod4 I get 15 fps on low-medium quality on 1024x768, my Half-Life 2 stutters on medium on 1024x768 and so on...

AND now I even got a permanent OC on my 8600M GT: 575 MHz core clock and 820 MHz memory clock (standard 475 MHz core and 700MHz memory) and I still got those problems (6fps in cod2,...).

So I really need help with this, does anybody with an 8600M GT GDDR3 (Asus G1S) got a good driver ?
And yes I use the "8600M GT stuttering fixes", yes I always do a clean driver install,... I tried everything

Strange, have you ever had consistent frame rates? I recently installed 178.13 which seems to run Bioshock smoothly. Also, I've had success from going into Nvidia control panel and changing the pre-rendered frames from 3>1. Let me know if this helps.

I also tried 178.13 and I'm on 178.15 right now. And I already changed pre-rendered frames to 1.

Here is my Nvidia control panel:

I would start by uninstalling software like rivatuner and all other software you don't use and/or effect GPU settings. Restart your system in safe-mode and run registry cleaners to get a cleaner system. You might wanna defragment you drives as well.

Then make sure you got DX9 installed and get stable drivers like the 174.31 by dell. Use all default settings in Nvidia controlpanel. Very important: don't OC yet - just use stock settings.

Now run a 3dmark06 and some games let us know the score.

ps. a good driver might also be 175.19 - don't know how the 64bit version holds up though.

    Allright, I'll try it out.
I hope it will work but this is a clean, 4/5 days old install of vista, but who knows.. :p

    thanks :)

Indeed, why not.. the GPU in the G1S gets hot ok.. but I keep an eye on the temperatures, while playing crysis my max was 90°C WITH OC.. the GPU starts the stutter at 96°C so It's fine :p

And I will try what xystus said later today..

How significantly does OC raise temps? Mine gets almost to 0C w/o during Bioshock...

I tried it with the 175.19 driver, vista performance (aero) is superb and temperatures are GREAT ! Even with powermizer on low clocks everything goes smooth ! BUT, I got the SAME problem in my games ! 6 fps in cod2, low fps in cod4,.. I'm gone start crying man !! :p

 is my GPU dying? Maybe :p

I really hate this, I can't play a game if I want to, nothing runs like it should run.

And I'm curious, can another G1S user tell me like how TF2, COD2, COD4, BF2 runs on his G1S? =P

You might try to install a second OS like XP SP3 (32bit of course) or Vista 32bit, and then test your games in that environment with drivers written for those OSes.

Have you also tried running the games in compatibility mode for example?
Sometime the 64bit environment can get problematic.
Although you might want to try disabling AERO before starting your games and see if that makes a difference.

I've played TF2 on my g1s and it ran like a charm, no lag whatsoever. Temps topped out at the upper 80's...

@ Deks: yes, I have tried running my games in Windows XP SP2 modus and I also disabled aero.

@ BenLeonheart: I hope your NOT right !

@ plattnnum: On high settings? My TF2 even lags at medium settings..

Ok guys, I just ran 3DMARK06, I wanted to see my scores because NOTHING runs normal any more...

AND.. the results were as I expected:

    STANDARD 3DMARK06 SETTINGS, NO OC (475/702) , Driver 174.31 x64:

    STANDARD 3DMARK06 SETTINGS, OC (550,820) , Driver 174.31 x64:

 Look at those scores... even a 8600M GT with DDR2 can get scores in the 4000, I get in the 2000 and I got GDDR3 memory ! And I also get those scores with other drivers (also tested with 177.66 and 178.15 I think) !
Now I understand why my games run like sh*t !

But what I don't understand is.. WHY is my 8600M GT running so bad  :(

EDIT: What I also noticed is that my GPU temperatures are so LOW ! Normally my GPU idles at 62°C (now at 52°C) and normally 94°C under full load (and now mostly not even 80°C !!). Today, I was testing again: I played crysis for some time (at unplayable fps !) and my maximum temperature was 74°C ! Normally the max. temperature while playing crysis should be 94°C... It's like my GPU is working at 50% :S
Also, my 3DMARK06 score should be in the 4000-5000 range (thats my current 3DMARK06 score x1,5 or x2...)

No, You've bought a laptop that has a major design flaw in its' cooling system, and strictly speaking, is not fit for the purpose for which it is intended.

I can play COD4, UT3, Grid etc. OK on mine, but only after I've done the sleep trick. It's just WRONG to have to use an O/S exploit to bypass a GPU thermal protection threshold just to play commercially available games on a "Gaming Machine", and sit there whilst the internal components of our machine are almost bubbling beneath our fingertips, and then telling our friends about our fantastic gaming machine.

ASUS G1S - Let's GAME !!! (and save a fortune on our winter fuel bill  )

Many users will respond that unhappy G1S users should buy themselves a cooler.

I don't recall compulsary use of an aftermarket cooler part of the specification of my gaming machine.

It's pretty clear to me that the GPU is the culprit.
Contact your supplier ASAP, DO NOT MENTION that you've been OCing, wipe out the hdd before sending it back and also...if possible, clean the dust on it :p

And When it comes back again with a new GPU,and you've spent a few hours restoring it to its' former glory, 30 seconds after gaming again, it will hit 96 degrees and start juddering, until you use the sleep trick.

(Unless they find a miracle cure, and do something different from all the other units they've "Repaired")

:( this is what I was scared for...

So the best thing I can do is send my laptop to Asus for repair ? (I still got warranty)

The problem is that I also need this laptop for college..
But if something is wrong with my GPU it would be stupid not sending it in for repair, I know..

Before I contact Asus I first want to make sure the problem is nothing software-wise. I'm going to install the original Asus G1S driver for the GPU and run 3DMARK06 again. If I still got the problem I will swap my new HDD for my old HDD (with the original vista home premium 32 bit on it), the last time I ran 3DMARK06 on my old HDD I had a score of 4700 I think, so If my score is in the 2000 again on my old HDD something is wrong with my GPU..

EDIT: I have read here that somebody had a faulty 8600M GT in his G1S and Asus swapped the G1S motherboard for the (new) G1Sn motherboard with the GeForce 9500M GS 512MB DDR2 on it..
The 8600M GT GDDR3 is a LITTLE bit faster than the 9500M GS but the 9500M GS runs much cooler and performance-wise it even might be faster than the 8600M GT, so it wouldn't be a bad thing if they swapped the motherboard xD :p

My Asus G1SN idle GPU temp can go up to 60C and so far I have not seen it go above 86C during gaming but I haven't pushed it far yet so I don't know about it running cooler than the G1S. At least not in my case.

They should just give all of us G50vT's he he
Although may i put my cent in and say that ive never had any issues with my GPU. The temps, after playing Dead Space on high settings, with V-SYNC, at 1368x... resolution and a 525/1050/750 OC are always in the mid 80's (monitoring through Riva Tuner). I am using 179.14 drivers with the modded inf from laptopvideo2go.com, the drivers were made by Asus and are WHQL signed. COD4 runs at native res with everything on high but no AA and 2x AF and no V-SYNC. Crysis with everything on medium at 1280x1024 runs great. Actually almost everything runs on high settings except for Crysis and Fallout3.
