Just wondering what temps people with the 8600M GT GDDR3 are getting idle and in usage. Mine seems to be runing a bit too high for my liking, 85 idles, and way too high in use.

Mine idles around 70, gets to 85 after a gaming session. This is with a Targus ChillMat. Without, it's 77 idle.

68-72 idle, up to 95 when gaming. This is on an Asus G1s.

Is the temperature reading for an OCed 8600GT GDDR3 card? It's scary to think those temperatures are for stock speed cards.

Stock here. It's hot, but still pretty far from the 124 shut-off point.

If this is the NORMAL temperature reading for a stock card, how much higher can the thermometer go before damage on the card becomes long-term?

At 124 the card shuts down, preventing further damage.

So 124 is the safety valve, my question is whether 75-85 celsius is something the card is built to handle or if the temperatures are so high that damage is already beginning to accumulate.

Its consider "fine" before one's card hit 100 celcius. My 5920G will also get 85 if play modern game.

85°C for an idle GPU is really high. Are you using nTune (nView) to monitor the GPU?

I have a MBP (8600m GT GDDR3) and the idle GPU temperature ranges from about 45-55°C. Playing BioShock with ForceWare 163.44 in XP I get an average of about 83°C with 91°C maximum.

My OC'd 8800GTS640mb is cooler then that when gaming for a long time -_-

I'm kind of glad I have the DDR2 version of the 8600mGT, doesnt get that hot at all.

Yeah so's my max OC'd 1950XTX but that can't be carried around very easily. Figured I do a bit o' grill work to the lower deck and with some decent air have been able to drop those numbers a considerable amount, 75 no fan 95max in 3dmark06 with a gap of about 3/4 inch between desk top and notebook. A cooler pad with the right fan placement I might be golden.

Rivatuner and Everest to read temps (both the same)

About the 124 shut down, do you know if this is before the damage threshold?

I don't know for sure, but logically, it should be. CPUs and HDDs shut down before they reach their damage threshold, I'd assume the same for the GPU.

The temps are pretty normal for the Asus G1s. I don't think Asus would make a notebook that slowly fries the GPU inside. The rest of the temps are normal, so I'm not worried - 2 year standard warranty.

For all you G owners with the 8600 GT what kind of gpu cooling does it have, if you know, I've never ripped one of those apart.

If idle temps are at 85 degrees Celsius, I would recommend seeing if there might be dust clogging your fan vents. Get a can of compressed air and clean that sucker out, if that is the case.

Dust is a notebook's #2 enemy, #1 being precariously placed liquids.

im happy with my 8600m gt DDR2 as well. 35*C idle WITHOUT a cooler is very nice indeed.... well thats only because i forced my fans to be on all the time :D

GPU does reach like 65*C under load though

oh and its overclocked to 630/475

My G1S idles at around 63-70 degrees...

Not overclocked, it reaches 96 degrees running modern games.

Overclocked it has maxed out at 110 degrees...

I think the OP's idle temperature is a minor cause for concern.
