its not that i say laptop2go.com drivers are bad or anything, but for some reason i'm not much convinced that any third party modified drivers are safe.

maybe i'm wrong and when i realize drivers couldn't harm your laptop or crash the OS then someday i will start using drivers from third party websites...

in fact right now there are couple threads in this forum that i argue this factor... for now i'm happy that DELL decided to release new driver for Vostro 1500... and i'm sure it is good news for most Vostro users...

Yeah but v.156.83? Come on, you gotta be kidding !!! And FYI, The drivers at LV2GO are not modified, they just add a few lines to the nv_disp.inf, that's all

i know that, but modifying INF alone has lot of effect as well... although i'm not good enough to understand what effects a particular INF modifications would have on a given system i do know that if you play around with INF its good enough to crash you system. and i'm sure you have heard of issues people have had with third party drivers.... anyway i'm waiting for a driver guru to explain this for me... when i'm convinced that what effect an INF file could have on system then i will use the laptop2go.com drivers

anyway, in case if you didn't notice 156.83 is a new release although the version number seems low... check drivers date on laptop2go.com. this is something i'm a bit confused with as well... what's the release data and version number.. some 16x.xx releases have a older release data than 156.83

Nope, there is a little confussion, let me try to clarify it:
    1) The driver of third parties (like laptopvideo2go) are not their drivers, they are from the manufacturer (i.e. nVIDIA). The modified .inf file is to make it accept the driver itself with the mobile card. Why? Well, the manufacturers give very little support in mobile drivers in comparison with their desktop counterparts. But it happens that the mobile GPU's are actually weaker desktop counterparts, that's all.
    2) The issues you have been reading lately are due to two different causes:
    a) Driver 169.25, it seemed to be like a beta version, and yes, it caused many problems.
    b) There are two safe methods to install your drivers (like 169.09 or 169.21, etc.): One is the 'safe disk' method, which I don't know how to use. The other is like the standard method (look on the sticky posts for updating drivers). Basically it is: replece the modified .inf on the folder of the new drivers. Then: uninstall actual drivers -> restart -> install new drivers -> restart. I have done this method and it does not fails.

    I hope this can help.

Ok another thing here, and btw I use laptopvideo2go drivers, they are NOT mobile drivers. They are desktop drivers with features unlocked in the inf and mobile card support added. Furthermore the latest ones are BETA driveres. Though they come from Nvidia, they are not official releases.

If you want to get drivers ment for laptops you have to go through the manufactuerers.

With that said, even the beta laptopvideo2go drivers far outperform the manufactuerer drivers.

i know that too... i really don't think any third party is smart enough to write driver for GPUs

i guess i used the wrong wording by mentioning third party drivers.

its all those tweaks sometimes that can go really wrong... in the case of nVidia GPUs it is this famous INF file... my worry is that no third party modifies INF for individual laptop model... and in the previous conversations here in this forum different people said that drivers wouldn't effect the actual way the hardware works.. and some mentioned that hardware related information are all in GPU's BIOS rather than drivers... so that INF modification shouldn't really effect anything... and they maybe correct...

but if you read the laptop2go.com FAQ, they say that modifying INF could let you change the clock speed etc,. and this is something that i'm not convinced at all... as you know same GPU model in different laptops have different specifications.. while the modified INF would work on most laptop there could be some laptops that these drivers would have bad effect on...

anyway, i usually play safe.. and like to know the more about something before i really go ahead with it..

If you have to ask use 32 bit.

Unless you are running ultimate then just check under properties.

Ah, I'm using 32 bit. Thanks!

Anyways, for the Laptopvideo2go drivers. If it says only 8600 GT, that also means 8600m GT as well, right? Just making sure before I install these random drivers =D

    the 169.09 one?

No, it means the desktop 8600GT. You have to get the modded INF file to support mobile cards.

No reason not to get the latest.

There are tons of people on here running those laptopvideo2go drivers in Dell systems, and others, without issues.

Hi All - can anyone post the actual url and file name that has the drivers for nVidia 8600M GT for Windows XP. I have thus far downloaded several files (R158222.exe, 169.21_forceware_winxp_32bit_english_whql.exe) that were supposed to be XP drivers for nVidia 8600M GT, but the programs don't recognize the card.

    Many thanks.

I second ADDI's question. I think it's 167.57, but the link for .inf file doesn't work.
