    hello,
this is my first post on this site. :D
i have an acer laptop with 8600M GT DDR2 512Megabyte video card.
my card idles at 60-63 C and when i play games like
Need For Speed (maxed out) and Assassins Creed (also maxed) the
temperatures go all the way to 92 C!

is that high?? I even see the idle temps high!
currently using 169.09 driver from lv2g.. and HWmonitor to check the
    temperatures.

btw, no fans are clogged or anything... the laptop has been with me for
    less than 2 weeks.

please mention your driver version if you have any imporvements over my results.

I will appreciate all of your help.

the idle temperature is fine. Mine idles at that in windows. The highest I've seen mine go was 91. Usually it'll max at about 88. It's not the max that should worry you, but whether or not your fans are bringing it down. If it's only at 92 for a second or two, then it's fine. You *should* be in the low 80s or high 70s most of the time. (BTW what laptop is this? there are different norms for different models.)

Mine never gets out of the low 80s, but I have a 17" laptop that cools very well since it's so large.

I can't speak for the ddr2 but those numbers are fairly normal for the ddr3.

You should download some newer graphics drivers from LaptopVideo2Go.com . Go to their community forum and find the 177.70 drivers. I have been using them for a few days now and they are very good. You should update because the new drivers are a lot better performance wise (for me and my SLI 8600GTs).

Same with the DDR3 in my G2S-B1, mid-upper 80s, low 90s under load.

Dude I play assisns creed all on max for normally 2/3 hours at a time and mine never passes 74c!!! Yours is just tooooooooooooo high if you ask me...

Anything over 80c is meant to be damaging to your system.

No it's not. If your laptop was built correctly you should be fine until 100... that's when damage starts to become an issue.

I dont think anything is 'wrong' your laptop or settings or anything, since all the others with the same card as you seem to be around that temperature. I was just noticing how the ATI equivalent to the 8600M GT card idles at a much lower temperature o_o and i thought my notebook got hot.

but just incase you should try to clean out your vents.

It's more than common for 8600mGT ddr2 to hit 90c on a heavy load.

If you prop up the back it can get much better results.

When playing Fable TLC for long periods of time on max my laptop hit it's first 90C, so I propped up the back with 3 dvd cases.

I don't go above 83C now. Usually stay in high 70's.

The DDR2 to my knowledge is normally loading at 85C, or around there.

The DDR3 is the one with the issues I believe. Some I hear reaching like 109C.

ATI Radeon HD 2600 is ATI's response to the Nvidia 8600M GT.
Or is the Nvidia 8600M GT Nvidia's response to the ATI Radeon HD 2600?
Bleh, I dont know, but you get the point. The HD 2600 and the 8600M GT are rivals, for lack of a better word.

    This is how it goes:
    HD 2600 DDR2 < 8600M GT DDR2 < HD 2600 GDDR3 < 8600M GT GDDR3
The Nvidia card gets better performance mainly because of drivers; spec wise, I actually think the HD 2600 is better, but I havnt looked it up to be 100% sure.

One thing to note tho, obviously as is being discussed in this thread, the HD 2600 seems to run a lot cooler then the 8600M GT...atleast thats the case with everyone who has posted here so far.
