I think old oblivion hasn`t been updated since there is a variable called "bForce1XShaders" in the newest patched oblivion which seems do the same thing by forcing 1.X shaders instead of 2.X/3.0. In any case this is much better than runing in very low quality which makes it look like a N64 game with no lighting.

You can get a nice framerate boost by install some of the recommended mods from the thread i mentioned with barely noticable loss of graphic quality.

I currently use the following to get 20fps outdoors with HDR (7400go).

Low Poly Grass (reduces geometry count of grass)

Quiet Feet (Fixes stuttering caused by all onboard audio users)

Operation Optimizing (reduces geometry count of Architecture
    ( http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=oblivionmods.detail&id=2731)

Oblivion PolyGone Overhaul [OPO], Polys be gone! (reduces geometry count of Rocks and adds distant buildings)

Deparallaxer Reupload (disables shader intesive pseudo 3d effects on certain textures, nice frame rate boost)

Optimized LOD Landscape (reduces geometry count of landscape)
    http://www.tessource.net/files/file.php?id=2833

Optimized LOD Heads (reduces geometry count of heads)

I'm playing it on my MBP with HRD and medium size textures, everything else is full, and outside with the grass I get a nice and constant 30fps, but in cities and inside it goes up to 60fps.

I tried oblivion on a 3200 xp desktop with x700 video card (not onboard) , Win Xp and 1 gig of ram. I hated playing the game this way. So I went and purchased a 360 just for this game. It was night and day difference. Some games are just too demanding for most systems... Oblivion is one of those games that is just better on the console. I know this is not an option for everyone but if you can, obtain a 360 and have fun. If not, turn down the settings and have fun on the pc.

    Best Wishes,
