I'm trying to choose between the Toshiba X205-7438 (Best Buy special) and the Asus G1S-A1. From a pure gaming perspective, particularly new games like Bioshock, which will offer better performance?

The Asus is more expensive but is smaller, lighter and for sure has DDR3. The Toshiba is larger, heaver and *maybe* has DDR3 -- but has much better speakers.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Mario64

I have read the other articles here. So you're saying the 8700 is better even though it may use DDR2?

I think most people believe that the 8700gt only comes gddr3. Check the toshiba section, everyone is posting their 3d scores and core speeds.

Even if there were, they'd be clocked higher than the 8600M Gt's. However, that highly clocked DDR2 is waaay too expensive.

but since the 8700 is a higher clocked 8600, it wouldn't make sense to call a ddr2 card like that - 8700, since they would be clocked the same...

Go to best buy and look at that thing is a tank... its massive! I'd take the asus any day if you can afford it. You can OC the 8600gt and get similar results and a its comes with a MUCH better cpu. If I had the money I'd get the g1s no doubt, I'm getting a dell though bc its 500$ less =p

You're right it is quite large. In reading further forum posts it looks like the Asus is getting ~3,600 in 3dmark06 while the Toshiba is getting ~4,700. That seems like a big difference. How safe is it to overclock the Asus and do you think it could ever reach the Toshiba's score?

i debated between those two laptops - i went with the toshiba. i know its big for the graphics card but look at the asus (ewwwww - looks like a plastic toy i'd give to my kid) ::just my opinion:: .. without a doubt the toshiba is awesome, ive been playing every game i can get my hands on with this beast and i've been the happiest with this laptop than any other i've had.

Not to mention the X205 has a superior cooling/air flow design.

If you are thinking on the Toshiba but the size and weight stop you but the Asus
portability attract you why you don't check the Sager NP5791 I think is in the middle of both ( in weight ) and you can upgrade the video in the future. Wich I'm not sure if you can do that with the Toshiba or Asus. If I'm wrong about that somebody correct me please...

if you're going with the Toshiba with the 8700m then it will probably have mxm 3 which means you'll be able to upgrade to a gpu like the 8800. as far as i know G1s has mxm 2 with the 8600m. if you do want good gaming though, you will most likely have to compromise weight and size.

Yes, to the best of my knowledge neither laptop features standard MXM, though the G1s has a modular, "reverse" MXM.
