I plan to buy a laptop with a 9600M GS 512 MB card soon. I was searching for some performance in games over the internet and I came to this:
http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-9600M-GS.9450.0.html
It says: The following values are based on the 8600M GT. As the core of the 9600M GS is similar (only slightly higher clocked), the following benchmarks should give a good impression on the gaming performance of the card.
Well, according to that site the 8600M GT is actually the one with the higher clocked core. (475 Mhz vs 430 Mhz on the 9600M GS) The construction of that sentence seems pretty strange to me then, cause it would seem like the 9600 has the higher clocked one. Or do they mean some of the other specs of that card? The shader and memory speed is higher on the 9600...
9600M GS:
Core Speed * 430 MHz
Shader Speed * 1075 MHz
Memory Speed * 800 MHz
8600M GT:
Core Speed * 475 MHz
Shader Speed * 950 MHz
Memory Speed * 700 MHz
So would be safe to compare gameperformances of the 8600M GS and the 8600M GT or are they quite different? And which one is the inferior one then?

A higher shader clock will boost performance more as the shader processors do the bulk of the work with modern gpu's.
They will perform very similarly although the 9600m GS will probably be more efficiant. -
DDR2 9600M GS= GDDR3 8600M GT.
That should give you an idea. If it has a 512MB, it's probably a DDR2 card. -
800mhz was gddr3 i thought :S

The 9600m GS is GDDR2 and it will probably be exactly the same (maybe slightly faster) as the GDDR3 version of the 8600m GT but the 9600 will run cooler, which is a big plus for a laptop.
As for comparing the 8600 GS vs the 8600 GT ... the GT will dominate it because it has twice the stream processors (16 vs. 32) , especially if its the GDDR3 version.
8600M GT vs. 9600M GS?
