Any guesses as to when there will be a significant replacement for the 8600 on 15 inch lappies (e.g. Vostro 1500)? My understanding is that as of yet the 9 series is not the answer.

I think the newer cards seem to be too hot for 15.4".

Look at the Alienware. It's supposed to be designed for the more powerful card but it still runs very hot.

I'm thinking maybe when a cooler card comes out.

Give it another year or so. My guess is by spring 2009 we should see the 8600M GT taken off the shelf as a mid-range solution.

Itll be a bit before the 8600 isnt used anymore; they havent even released the full range of notebook 9 series yet.

doesnt the GeForce 9500M GS 512MB DDR2 deliver the same performance as a 8600GT ddr2?
i wish they just released the ddr3 equivalent. ah gosh.
and with the 9500m already out in the market, we really have to wait a year to get the higher ones? gesh... what a tease...

there isn't even a real 9 series out yet for desktops. all the 9 series cards are just die shrinks of the 8 series. in the past, nvidia would still this the 8 series. we probably won't see a real "new" card until the 10 series. woo hoo. 9800gx2 is just two (die shrunk) 8800 chips bolted together. they did this exactly before with the die shrunk version of the 7 series but they called it a 7800gx2...

laptops that currently have an 8600m gt thermal / power budget might see a die shrunk 8700m gt called who-knows-what in the moderate future.

basically, it seems like there isn't anything special coming to laptops for a bit longer.
