if an 8600M-GS GDDR3 is overclocked, can it reach the same potential as an 8600M-GT GDDR2?

No. You may get close, but I doubt you'll reach 8600m-GT speeds.

would it make it make a significant difference in speeds? such as...over 10-15 fps difference in real life gaming?

I'm sure you'd be able to get an appreciable performance increase from overclocking.

I didn't see an 15 fps increased, but I did see about a 6 fps increase on average.

And another thing to note, I didn't test games at the clock speed when I got the 3632 score, only at 650/750.

i see, thanks a lot! its a big issue in deciding between the asus v2s and f8sv, but i think id go for the v2s anyway, since its still under my budget, its lighter, and has a nice spillproof keyboard. not to mention the all black color, which i prefer to the black and silver :D

GS has half the shaders- even under ideal circumstances, the clock speeds will only somewhat make up for this huge handicap in shader power. The shader and GPU clocks would have to be twice as high to match the theoretical power- even then, things like ROP's will push the GT past the GS. Even then, remember that the GT is a huge overclocker as well. Get what you can afford, and don't look back.

Congratulations at failing to disprove me. His test was run at 1280 by 800, which isn't comparable to the same score at 1280 by 1024 on the 8600m gt.

lol, i'm not trying to turn this into a contest, I was trying to help the person out. At 1280 by 1024 I wouldn't be surprised if the scores were similar to the 8600gt.

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=136329

The last post on the first thread shows a score of about 3300, stock clock If you look at the specs, you can see it's WXGA panel, which means the OP probably tested it at 1280x800 resolution. Even with the current drivers, the score goes up only about 100 points. So you can expect a score of 3400 with the DDR2 8600m GT. The reason is because the DDR2 version is clocked 300 mhz lower on the memory side.

    Now if you look here:

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=138614&page=3

You can see a score of about 3900 on the same resolution, but overclocked to 570/440.

That's true, but remember that the DDR2 is actually underclocked, so an overclocked DDR3 8600m GS would be able to match the theoretical power of the underclocked DDR2. It's the DDR3 GT that has the true clock speeds, and my GS is FAR from matching those speeds.

Basically, what my conclusion is that we have to look at what the OP meant. Did he mean, can the DDR3 8600m GS overclocked match the stock speeds of the DDR2 8600m GT? And the answer according to synthetic benchmarks is yes, and it can even surpass it by a few hundred points if done correctly. If he meant, can the overclocked DDR3 GS match the overclocked DDR2 GT, the answer is no, since it can be argued that the GT is just as overclockable as the GS. Again, I stress that this should NOT reflect real world results; there isn't enough gaming results from users to compare the two cards. I have a 8600m gs game results thread in here somewhere, so please refer to that if you have any questions regarding the 8600m GS DDR3.

What were the temps like with the GS overclocked? Would you be happy keeping it at that clocking?

Temps were MAX @ 85 degrees overclocked to 680/770, 80 degrees overclocked to 600/700. And the samsung does a great job in dissipating the heat, so yes, I'm very comfortable playing it at this temperature. I played all my games at 600/700

gs 3dmark06 scores 2191 and gt with ddr2 clocks 2900, based on these figures you can even beat the scores of gt if gs with ddr3 is overclocked, by the way better get a gt with gddr3 it scores 4200 at stock speed of 475/700
