okay so if I purchase the compal IFL90 with the 8600GT in it, is this going to be able to play high demanding games now and new ones in the future because this seems like the best choice that I have right now for a santa rosa platform that can play games and I dont know how long it is going to take for new cards like the 8700 or 8800 to come out... do any of you know when these cards will be put into differet brand laptops like lenovo perhaps or dell,hp, sony? THANKS

if this is the preorder you may want to rethink this purchase for now. they have not clarified whether it will be an 8600gt or and 8600gs even though it says it is a gt.

The 8600GT is more or less like a 7900GS, so whatever games play well on a 7900GS (it's a pretty good card, so a lot of them do), that's what you're getting. However, with the 8700 and 8800 coming out next month (hopefully), you should wait for that. It'll really show the power of DX10. ;)

but those cards will go in 17" laptops, wich are not laptops, but "portable" computers.

    if thats what you want...

The 8600M GT performance is close to a go7800, which is slower than a go 7900gs. So you'll be able to play games a high-ish levels, native resolution (I think). Here's a thread woth both synthetic benchmarks and real world performance: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=125246

if you want high-end gaming laptop buy laptop w/ 7950gtx or wait for 8700 and 8800 dx10 GPUS...

if you want mid range laptop buy strictly with 8600m GT(asus g1s, compal ifl90, etc)..

Do not buy anything other if you are gamer.

I'm pretty sure they will also be in 15.4" laptops. I've heard of some ASUS models having an MXMIII graphics module, which are the high-end cards basically, and since the ones with MXMII (like the C90) have an 8500 or 8600, it only makes sense that the module that supports better memory cards would also mean the 8700 and/or the 8800 cards. ;)

I heard that the 8700 (and probably even the 8800) would be released around the middle-to-end of next month. This is very important if you're looking into playing a lot of the games this Fall and even next year at high settings, so if I were you, and if you are able to, I would wait.

I can't agree with that, first the 8600M GT will be available in laptops with less than 17" and also it's harder to have a small laptop on your laps than it is to have a 17".

The 8700M GT is being debuted in the Clevo D901C that's coming out very soon. The 8800M GTX has not been announced yet, but definitely expect it by the end of the summer.

Keep in mind only 17" laptops support the 8700M GT or future 8800M series graphics cards. Here are the chances of the 8700M or 8800M being put into the companies you listed above:

    Lenovo: Almost 0
HP: Almost 0, unless they put out a computer for their Voodoo line
Dell: 8800M will almost definitely be in the refreshed XPS M1710
    Sony: Very low

Historically every company except for Dell has avoided higher-end components in their laptops. The reason for that is because Lenovo makes business computers (which don't need that much graphics power). HP Pavilions and Dell Inspirons have been known to skirt away from high-powered graphics cards because of heat issues. Sony does it for the same reason. The only real high-end series out of any of those companies is the XPS line. Voodoo doesn't really count.

Yeah, the most powerful 15.4"/14.1" card right now is the 8600M GT.

How long do you think it will take Dell to do the refresh on the XPS M1710 after new DX10 cards like the 8700M and 8800M get announced?

There were rumors that the 15.4" Asus VX2 refresh will have a 8700M floating around somewhere...no clue where that originated...
