Hi I have set my 8600GT to default clocks and haven't touched it in a long time.. I have a vostro 1700 laptop and I last updated my drivers in January so it can't be a driver issue.

When I play CS:S after a while the game stops/stutters and then the FPS goes down to 40-50 from 100+. What I'm pretty sure happens is the graphics card crashes and it goes down to very low clocks or something... why does this happen? I'm playing on a solid desk and the left vent isn't blocked or anything. It's been happening everytime I play CSS and I have to restart my laptop to get my clocks back (is there a shortcut instead of restarting?).

    HELPPP

    laptopvideo2go.com

Download a couple of them and see for yourself :D

Try 2 DOX custom ones and 1 normal one on LV2 and the latest from nvidia.com

I tried downloading the 185.20 which I believe is the latest and I got to this page http://download.laptopvideo2go.com/nvidia/185series/18520_vista.exe

? I tried another link and ended up downloading some Driver Agent software which if I want to use to download the driver I have to pay a subscription fee...

When u say custom ones does that mean the drivers are programmed by random people? Isn't that dangerous?

All the newer drivers do this. I will tell you how to fix the problem just like I did in the last thread.

Use any overclocking tool you want and set 2d, low 3d and high 3d all to the clock speed you game at normally. After you are done gaming you can set the clocks back to normal.

Look at the downloads they range into the millions...

I use them, many use them...

    http://laptopvideo2go.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=22522

Download the driver and the modded INF (made so it works on all gpu's)

Custom ones usually perform better... thats the whole point of drivers from laptopvideo2go etc...

I used to have this problem due to my laptop gpu overheating and downclocking. Use hwmonitor to watch the temperature when you play.

I had the same issue with my 9500m gs downcloking during gameplay or crashing to the desktop with the nvmddlkm stopped responding message. I think it is a driver issue but with the newer ones. Guys with desktop GTX2xx cards are having the same issue. One question, have you updated to SP1 yet?

I actually had a tech from microsoft call me at home and talk to me for well over an hour about the issue. He assured me SP1 would help and I basically told him he was full of it. Installed it and poof it works. The card now downclocks while on the desktop (which it never did before) and ramps up to play the games without downclocking/crashing. I'm currently using 178.13.

Yeah desktop is basically 2D settings which doesnt need much power

then you have LOW END 3D which is what it sticks to when we have that Driver problem.

And Highend 3D is what we really want during gaming

You can set the speeds in Rivatuner

    But... 178.13... thats kinda old...

I finally (after installing and reinstalling a dozen different drivers) fixed the "crashing" to lower clock speed problems, by disabling powermizer when plugged in. There is a really good thread with instructions in the forums somewhere here so do a search...however, now that I made the adjustment never to downclock when on AC power, the drivers never "get stuck" at those lower clock speeds, which would happen and force a reboot to get back to regular clocks.

And for anyone worried as I was that being at full or oc'd clock speeds on 2d would cause a lot of excess heat, my gpu still idles at about 43c, which was no different then when it was powermized down to 200/400/100 or whatever the lowest setting is...

Also, the good news is it leaves powermizer on when on battery, so your not drawing extra power..

    Yeah! There you go!

Thats what I was trying to get at lol
    I knew I was forgetting something :D

Custom/INF drivers usually (even OFFICIAL ones) have problems with sleep/hibernate/powermizer
