Hmm. I was messing around with atitool and rivatuner, when I saw that the core temp, on my graphics card was 63 degrees in windows vista, doing nothing, having no applications open or anything.

I wonder how hot it will get when I am running an intensiv application like crysis... hmmm.

I was told that the temps should be around 30-40 for the normal user, when not doing anything. I am wondering if its possible that my gpu fan is not behaving like it should?

in sisoft, my CPU and harddrive both seemed to be around the 30-40 degrees mark. I dont understand why the graphics card is so hot, when not doing anything!?

I am using the 171.16 drivers by the way.

You should be worried more for the maximum temperature rather than the iddle temperature.

63°C seems a little high for standby. In my case (8600m GT DDR2) at stock clocks my temps are 49°C standby and goes up to 69°C while running 3D applications (games).

One easy way is to download AtiTools and run the 'Scan for Artifacts'. This application will stress your card like when playing a game and you can monitor the maximum temperatures.

    I hope this can help.

    Is it OC'd?

Mine idles around 55c and goes all the way up to 80ish at heavy load. No OC

the temperature depends on the ambient temperature and the particular notebook you are using, also the vista aero uses some 3d functionality so the desktop on vista should use a video card a bit more than the xp one. For comparsion the go7600 in my dv8000 idles at 55~65 and go to 80 when playing games(I saw it at 90 but it requires a hot day or that I block the air intake, like when I use it in my lap to play games :) )

thanks. currently running artifacts, and it still keeps jumping. its at 85 degrees now o_O

    what should I do?

I wanted to try to OC it a bit but, now its probably not a good idea.

I got GDR2 512 version! What to do?

edit: jumped to 87... i dared not go further. this was after 5 minutes. i suspect it would continue to go up. it didnt show any artifacts, so i dont think its broken(?) when it lowered to around 80 degrees the fan got more quieter...

I... Should I try underclocking it? would that help overall stability and performance?

    this is its stock clocks:

    core: 475,00 MHz

    memory: 400,00 MHz

Don't underclock. First of all, what is the model of your computer? I have heard some Asus or Zepto can go at those levels.

As you keep running the artifacts test your GPU will have to reach a maximum, it cannot go always up.

I saw this thread and immediately became interested because my gpu idles around 70C. So i ran atitools' artifact scanner but didnt finish, below is the reason why.(I have the Asus G1S-B1). Exactly what temp is dangerous for my laptop?

If it goes above 85 C , that is cause for worry.
    Anything below 85C is ok.

The G1S's GPU (8600M GT GDDR3) runs hot, it idles around 70-75C and can game at 90-110C (with OC).

I've seen responses from Asus saying this is normal.

    Asus are crazy! O_O
I would never imagine a ddr3 card would run that hot, unless there are real issues...
Check for dust,, clean your system and get a can of compressed air to clean it inside and outside(the vents)

No, I also have read many people with those laptops reporting such iddle temperatures as normal, not sure about the max temperature while gaming.

I have an ASUS G1S (8600m GT DDRR3) and can confirm, an Idle of 70-75 Degrees is perfectly normal. Gaming 92-103 Perfectly normal, without any Overclock.

This has been discussed many times on many different forums. ASUS are one of several Notebook manufacturers whose users report temperatures within these ranges. People without experience of using machines with such characteristics (and there are many), are not qualified to comment to the contrary, so I would advise against falling prey to the scaremongerers, and instead, start enjoying your excellent choice of machine.

    Nothing to worry about.
