I'm in the market for a new gaming laptop, but for the life of me can't find any 'gaming laptops' that run a native resolution of less than 1920x1200. I know you can use scaling, but that just looks plain bad, and turning scaling off and running at lower resolution puts a black box around everything which makes you wonder why you bought such a large, high res display in the first place.
What I'm wondering is, what is the comparative performance between the 8600m GT and the 8800m GTX, running at 1440x900 and 1920x1200 respectfully. Is most of the power of the 8800 taken up with rendering the 1 million extra pixels ? If the performance difference isn't that great I would rather save the extra $1000 bucks and put it towards another $2000 lappy 2 years down the track by which time mid range cards would be trampling the 8800m.
If anyone can point me towards some reviews or share their own personal experiences I would appreciate it.

gaming laptops that run native resolution of less than 1920x1200:
gateway p-6860FX 17" 1440x900
alienware m15x 15.4" 1440x900 and up
sager np5793 17" 1680x1050 and up
sager np9262 17" 1680x1050 and up
all of them have 8800m series
8600m GT at 1400x900 vs 8800m GTX at 1920x1200, how much does the extra resolution slow you down ?
