Sorry to be another one who bites the dust in the "this vs that" threads, but I really couldn't find anything about this. So I have some questions:

    0) Is there a 512mb 8600m GT with DDR3 (or GDDR3 whatever the difference is) ?
    q) If so, would the 512mb one USE all the memory that's there?
    t) Does anyone have it, and/or some benchmarks, maybe?

    Cheers! :D

ddr3 describes ram gddr3 g= graphics. You probably won't see any major difference between 256mb and the 512mb.

there is no 512mb gddr3 version of the 8600mgt. if there was then yes it would use all the memory.again there is no gddr3 512mb version so no benchmarks

    What driver are you using? I believe people with a 256mb 8600gt gddr3 don't get over 4500 in 3dmark06?

Well, thanks, but my original question was about the 512mb DDR3. Seems there isn't such thing.

But if there were, could you feel improvement from 256mb to 512mb (DDR3)? Because I read somewhere that DDR2 can't really use all of the 512mb,

I'm just wondering if a DDR3 COULD in fact use all the 512mb, and would it be faster than a 256mb...

yeah u would see an improvement. the ddr2 8600gt cant use 512mb but the 512mb gddr3{if there was such a thing} could

If you read my last post, I said my stock is 3893. It's almost 5k because of overclocking and raising cpu voltages.

No GDDR3 is always going to be faster than DDR2. Don't worry about the extra 256MB. It won't make a difference.

Yep I was about to post that... but I think the Macbook Pros are the only ones with GDDR3 512mb 8600s right now, since everyone seems to think they don't exist.

if there was a 512mb 8600m gt you would see little to no performance increase

Well there will probably be benchmarks on the new MBPs within the week... so we'll soon find out. I expect the difference to be minor though.

Yup. At 1280x1024, his score would be very similar to stock 256MB DDR2 cards.

I think it's useful for games with a ton of textures (Oblivion).

Voltages don't help performance. I undervolt and have the same performance. Nice scores though. What are your clocks?

whats the consensus on this then? Some are saying an extra 256mb will help whilst others are saying it wont!

How can we say if something is fast enough to utilize a certain amount of RAM? Is that not purely guesswork which in itself has no credibility?

128-bit buswidth with 512Mb video memory is like a huge pool of water with just a sinkhole to drain the water, i.e. lots of video memory is nice but the buswidth hampers how much data is being processed at any given time. A 512MB card vs my laptop card would probably have slightly better fps at resolutions 1680 and above with all other settings equal due to the increased video memory helping to load all textures in place before being slowly displayed on screen due to the limited buswidth.

Read narsnail's thread on the differences between the 8700GT and 7950GTX since his explanation on the importance of buswidth in video cards is better than mine.

Well, it depends, is the 256mb version a DDR3 version, or DDR2? It's almost a given that the 512 versino is DDR2, but if the 256 version is DDR3 it's definitely a noticeable difference.
