I am aware that there are two types of 8600m GT's: The gddr3 one, and the uh, weaker one. Is the one in the inspiron 1720 the gddr3 top powerful one or the lesser one. If it is the weaker one, how inferior is it to the other one?

The ddr 2 runs at 400mhz, but the ddr3 runs at 700mhz i think thats a 75% increase in the GPU core clock speed. This is because ddr3 run cooler therefore they can run it at a higher clock speed without any heat problems.

so what's in the 1720?
-
The lesser one.
Only 3 notebooks have the GDDR3 8600GT, the Macbook Pro, ASUS G1s and ASUS G2s. -
i wouldn't complain lol ; ; not sure why mines such a long wait. It's definately the 8600M GS that comes with 1720, but you could have upgraded it for like 180$ and picked 8600M GT.

but yeah...the 8600 in the Inspiron is the weaker of the two much to all Inspiron owners such as myself's chagrin. But despite this the 8600 still is a badass laptop card that can handle any game thrown at it. Sometimes you'll just have to compensate, like you won't be running Stalker or Oblivion with EVERYTHING turned up high but you can get pretty close. It chews up and spits out games like Battlefield 2 and Half-Life 2 though. -

I have it running at framerates in the 30's at 1280 x 1024 now, with the "simple" detail bar set at max. In the advanced settings, though, things still aren't maxed out by any stretch.
Rivatuner reports the GPU idle temps in the low 50's, running up to a max of 70 when I've been playing a while. That's okay, right? I'm not getting any artifacts. -
May have to do with the fact that his laptop is a 17" with a WUXGA display.
Alot more to handle than your 15" WXGA+
8600m GT inside 1720
