My acer with 8600m gs windows does not start if i install and enable nvidia drivers. it only shows the loading screen of vista and then just gives a black screen.
But if i disable the card or use the standard Vga drivers(generic) it works but no 3d apps can run.
This all started a month back when my laptop freezed and showed wierd colours while playing fifa. I am now just using the standard VGA graphics driver supplied with Vista.

    Any help is sincerely appreciated.

Your graphics card is dead, a common occurance with 8600 cards. The good news is that they are replacable in your series of machines and you could even get a better one. Look up 5920G and MXM. There are quite a few threads.

Or you could bake the GPU back to life seeing as it is removable. Your not gonna be risking anything seeing as the card is already dead but could be brough back to life.

Alternatively you could upgrade to something like a radeon HD4650
