    what are the counterparts of these cards compared to desktop gpu's?

    i think 8600m gt ddr2=8500 gt and 8600m gt ddr3=8600 gt ddr2

    i think you can equate both to the 8500gt, based on Gflops performance. is the difference between DDR2 and DDR3 models really noticable?

    no 8600m gt ddr2 is definitely faster than a 8500 gt. the 8600m gs i have is basicly a super clocked 8500 gt, and it's still a bit slower than a 8600m gt ddr2

    8600m GT is a little slower than the 8600 GT.

    The only difference between DDR2 and GDDR3 is a higher memory clock, nothing else.
