    Hey,

Ive had an xps m1530 for about 8-9 months now and my GPU temps have never been above 80-83. Today, i was playing a pretty non-gpu intensive game (Runes of Magic) and i started getting single digit fps. I then looked at my temps and i was at 93!

Has my GPU died on me? I know that they are defective and it means that their lives are significantly shortened. Im pretty sure its not the fan because like 3-4 days ago i was gaming and the temps were normal. Even earlier today they seemed fine.

What do you guys think? Time to send it back?

    THE TALE
    OF THE FAULTY
    NVIDIA GPU

I mean, there's not a lot to say. Ensure the fan is running and blow it out with dust off. If it still happens, send it back.

Hmm, I have a slight idea of what might be the problem.

If I play any non-CPU intensive game, my CPU isn't under load so it's temperature remains cool and the fans don't speed up. Since the fans don't speed up, the GPU heats up like hell. It was pretty funny cause my GPU temps for

Do you have the A12 bios? There is a bug in that bios that very rarely the fan won't turn on when the heat starts rising. It's happened to me once, but it is pretty rare. Only thing you can do is restart.

Using bios A09 and the fan seems to run quite often. When im playing games it is running very hard as well.

Updating the BIOS would lower the temps at the cost of having the fans run for longer and run faster... but it would only coddle the issue. There is no fix besides replacement.

Maybe its the thermal paste that wore out...
but, you'd be better off calling Dell and tell them you've got overheatng issues... :)

    1) Thermal paste does not "wear out." If it is old and the heatsink is removed, it will have to be replaced, but as long as the contact is not broken, the paste will be fine.
    2) The M1530 uses a thermal pad between the GPU and HSF, not thermal paste.

Maybe the word was not "wear out"
But, of course that it affects the performance (heat-wise).
The more time its used, against the thermal pads/paste, it will generate more heat eventually, therefore need to be replaced.

I may say that the original poster may not have a faulty GPU, just need a general cleanout and heatsink/pad replacement.
