II remember reading that the 8600 and 8400 cards existed due to having the same fabrication size as the mobile geforce 7 series. I am curious, even though my computer is not santa rosa equipped, is an upgrade (some may say downgrade) to a 8600m possible? I thought the unreleased 8800m or watevr they will be called are unreleased due to heat problems and were waiting for the new fabrication process. So can it be done? Since I have an e1705, would overclocking be possible due to my e1705's better cooling?

The E1720 has been redesigned leading me to believe that it will have a different architecture and thus fitting an 8600GT will be impossible due to physical dimensions, power, or heat.

fitment / how it mounts to the board is probably the major obstacle here as stated above. If it basically is the same size and has the same mounting points as the previous cards however...it would be possible. You can't know for sure until you have a 7900GS side by side with an 8600m. I here the 7950GTX beats the 8600m though...so that might be a good alternative from what I hear.
