Currently from what I've seen, you can only get dual 8700s along with desktop CPUs in a laptop, and according to some folks here, a desktop cpu in a laptop will melt your legs off and eat all of your power, so it's not worth it.
So should I wait untill dual 8800s or single 8800s are available without these case-melting desktop cpus? I just want a great laptop, and I'll save the Crysis rig for a PC when it comes out. But I hear that the 7950 outperforms the 8700 and that the 8700 is not DDR3, which is why I'm thinking of waiting for a laptop 8800. Otherwise, I was planning on getting
Sager 5791
17" (1920 x 1200)
Intel® Core 2 Duo T7700 | 4MB Cache | 2.4GHz | 800MHz FSB
4GB DDR2 667MHz 2 x 2048MB
1GB Intel® Turbo Memory
nVidia GeForce 8700M GT w/512MB
200GB | 7200 RPM | SATA
$2400 bucks.

Well this is where the Dell XPS M1730 shines. Pretty sure dell will come out with a 8800 option on the M1730 when the GPU is released. The XPS m1730 does not use desktop processors and can be upgraded to the x7900 CPU. Also this laptop uses sli. If you do not want to have SLI the Clevo M570Ru is another choice that is very cheep and can have it GPU upgraded when a new one comes along.

How long is it expected until the 8800 comes out for laptops?
-
oof, I don't know what your budget is, but that's quite a price premium. Also, that'll run Crysis pretty well on medium (maybe high even, at 1280x800). For half that, you could build a desktop that'll run crysis on high/very high.
If you're going to be building a crysis rig, why get a beast 17" as well?.. unless you're too lazy to break down the rig to LAN with it, and you really have nothing better to put the cash towards.
What's the purpose of the lappy? What's your time frame for purchasing it? 8800 notebook cards should be out 'soon' but nobody really knows when 'soon' is yet. -
Where talking about this month or next month give or take a few weeks. If it has taken all this time to release it is probably spectacular.
-
Actually, there is a 8700M GPU with GDDR3 and there is a thread (sticky) on this forum comparing it to the Go7950GTX. The 8800M/8700M GTX, Ultra or whatever they call it will probably be out by the end of the year (or beginning of the next one).
The NP5791 is a great single GPU notebook that you can get from top-notch resellers.
Having said that, I'd wait. -
all the 8700gt's are gddr3 and the 7950gtx will always be better. The only thing the 8700 has on it is DX10
-
Alright. I'll wait it out then. No point in getting a laptop that will have a quickly obselete gpu, especially since the 8800 is going to be much better than an 8700, right?
My budget for a laptop is around $2600. It is for games on the go, and for school (not word; 3ds max/photoshop etc.. I like having them all open at once!).
-metapod, for my next PC I plan on going all out, so quad cores and sli this and dd3 that, so it will probably be more than this laptop. -
im sure you will be able to get a laptop for that price when its released. and yes of course it will be better, and it sure as hell better kill the 7950gtx or ill be unpleased as well as many others

8700 / 8800 / 7950 = Mega $$$$
Build a kick-ass desktop + medium laptop for less than a high end laptop, unless you absolutely need a laptop for gaming all the time -

A man can dream can't he? Though an 8800 in a c90 is probable.

Just the unofficial news of there being two chipsets for it D8P/G92 (8800M GT: 256-bit bus and 256/512 GDDR3 for $149-169/$249-269) and D8M/G98 (which would replace then more low end GPUs, costing a bit more than $50). Both built on 65 nm and expectedly to be released October 29th.
